Hi Goldiwonder,

I wouldn't claim to be any sort of expert, but I always thought they were separate things - my hubby has high blood pressure but not AF, lucky him... and I have AF but not HBP. However, I found a US heart website that says high blood pressure is a risk factor for AF, though it doesn't say vice versa. BobD would say that you have to have the inherent tendency to have AF to get it, I'm sure... Link to website below.

Hi Goldiwonder

Strict answer is probably no, no-one can explain, certainly true that people with high blood pressure will sometimes get AF, but AF does not seem to cause high BP.

The beta blockers will be bringing the heart rate down, so you need to get back to the doctors and investigate the High BP and try and find out what the reasons are for this, but it's the usual list of course smoking, drinking, overweight, salt, stress and family or ethnic history. Outside of those I am not sure that medicine offers anything but treatment for the hypertension.

Good luck and be well

I'd suggest that high BP should be investigated and treated separately from your AF. I always had high BP before AF and it has been controlled for years with Lisinopril, Amlodopine and Bendroflumethiazide. (a lot of tablets!). When the AF became permanent and Bisoprolol was added to the list, my BP was consistently low and my GP gradually reduced the Lisinopril by half and things got a lot better. I would agree that AF doesn't cause high BP but high BP won't help your AF. Follow Ian's advice...time to see your GP!

At the moment my AF is being kept under control with Bisoprolol and I take Warfarin ( + Betahistine). Recently my BP proved to be a on the high side so my cardiologist recommended I take my BP twice a day for 2 weeks then see my GP if it did not moderate. This I did and now my GP has asked me to continue doing so for another 2 weeks, but taking my BP when I have sat down quietly for at least 15 minutes rather than taking it when I have been rushing around ( shopping, golfing etc.) as this would produce a more accurate reading. I am anxious to avoid more medication as I am always a bit wary how tablets may react with each other over a period of time, and possibly cause more problems. However I am grateful my GP is keeping an eye on my BP and can advise me what to do and prescribe medication if it really proves necessary (hope not!).
