What usually happens after a cardioversion - I expected to come off all the meds (not all at once obviously) but that's not happening.

I had a successful cardioversion in June, I had been taking Amiodarone for a week before, and was told by the cardio to continue with that and bisoprololo which had been reduced to 3.75, Coumadin,& Losartan until the follow up 2 months later, after a Holter ecg & thyroid test. Unfortunately I couldn't get appointment with him before January and was seen by another cardio who I thought would reduce the Amiodarone at least, but she has reduced the bisoprololo and told me to keep taking the rest until the next check-up in 6 months after an Holter ecg & blood tests etc. She did say that she would not have prescribed Amiodarone. I think that you would be wise to keep taking the drugs at least until you see you cardio next. It is quite normal to try to maintain NSR with drugs after a cardioversion to give the heart a chance to stabilise. I know when I had my first ablation I expected to be off drugs and "cured" the next day and unfortunately doctors aren't very good at explaining things. Even after my third successful ablation it took me many months to wean myself off the drugs as every time I cut down I had little events. Had to cut down half a tablet at a time till I was free. No cold turkey!!

Thanks. It's reassuring to know that the treatment is normal, especially when you don't see the same person. I'm afraid that even after almost 40 years in Italy I sometimes wonder if they have got it right (or if I have understood properly), my daughter was unable to come with me this time so had to take my (Italian) husband who I sometimes think is more the foreigner than I am:)
