Is SBRT radiation on alternate days safe?

After finishing chemo (docetexel) in December, I am to receive 6 SBRT radiations (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) over 2 weeks. I had heard that SBRT is generally given once a week. Is this accelerated schedule common?

It's only in Canada that it's given once a week. In the US, it's usually given every other day (which is what I had).

I was given three treatments in a row Thanksgiving, week Monday, Tuesday Wednesday and then five days off and came back Monday and Tuesday, December 2 &3 to finish up. I was concerned about it but almost 5 side effects. They used to give SBRT treatments five days in a row but now they space it every other day so I was a little concerned myself, but he told me it should be no problem. I was at MSK so I wasn’t worried so far doesn’t feel like anything was done to me…..but my PSA did drop from 3.4 to 1.20 3 months later

In my view, SBRT is much preferred over the broader pelvic radiation, although some may need the latter, and unfortunately many docs still do the 25 or 30 broader radiation treatments even though there is plenty of data to support doing SBRT. You did not say whether you are haing a SpaceOAR procedure prior to the SBRT. That procedure will provide additional protection against long term SE's from the SBRT. Unfortunately, my own SpaceOar procedure failed, but I was fortunate to have a top RO, great technicians, and state of the art MRI guided equipment. Its been a year since my 5 SBRT treatments (on the alternating day calendar) of the prostate and one MET; I have had zero side effects; and have had non detectible PSA ever since.

Good luck in your battle.

I had 5 sessions over two weeks. Had blood in my urine for a day and a half near the end, most likely because my ureter was close to the lymph nodes that were targeted.

I had single met to T8 3 years ago. I had 3 treatments of 9 Gy each M,W and F for a total of 27 Gy. It killed the tumor on follow up PSMA PET with current undetectable PSA. There is no absolutely correct total dosage or schedule. It varies with RO and Institution.

I've had SBRT three days in a row at MAYO on two different single lymph nodes. These occured a year apart.I was told they see the same results as three sessions over 5 days. Especially useful for patients that travel for care.
