Since Thanksgiving is approaching I thought I would share my most memorable story of that day. During the Vietnam war, I was stationed at a base that had both a fighter and transport wing. The transport planes would fly into army fields and distribute stuff. The army guys were in very isolated locations and had limited access to alcohol but had access to steaks. So we bartered with them and we traded 3 bottles of Jim Beam for 50 pounds of frozen steaks.
Since I was the junior LT in the squadron and I was off the flying schedule that day I was the cook for that Thanksgiving meal. We made a makeshift barbecue out of a 50 gal drum and manufactured a grill and it was my job to cook the meal. It was not the most elegant meal but the laughs and friendships of that Thanksgiving have stayed with me all these years. Every Thanksgiving I say a prayer and hope some of those guys remember that dinner as fondly as I do. It brought a little of America to us far from home and love ones.

This year we are going to a Friends-Giving dinner with some of our friends from yoga, inspired by Friends the TV show.1st time I had heard of such a thing.
We will also attend 2 dinners with each of our respective families. We are blessed with great family and friends.
Okay this is a twofer- Christmas and Valentine Day. This was because he wasn’t allowed to go anywhere during Christmas and New Year’s. We saved up our gifts and he was finally able to get leave and come visit on Valentines Day. So we opened the gifts then. And ever since we have called Valentines Day —Alternate Christmas. A new tradition was made for us to share.
One Thanksgiving when my wife temporarily walked away from the dining room table I was able to snatch the part of the Turkey that goes over the fence last. A treasured possession which can sometimes end in a fight to the death.
