Low Potassium level due to Zytiga

I've been on zatiga for almost 3 years with good results however about a month ago I started feeling some cramping and also edema in my legs which eventually led to a diagnosis of low potassium level.

I have had three infusions now already in hospital to get potassium up as well as daily small infusions from home nursing company to try to get my potassium levels up but does not seem to really have a lasting effect.

Have any of you guys had this experience and can share any tips and tricks of how I can make my potassium stick

It sounds like you are not getting enough prednisone. Discuss raising the dose slightly or switching to 0.5 mg/day dexamethasone.

This explains why that happens:

I had to supplement my potassium too. I also had to change up my blood pressure meds from hydrochlorothyacide (dieretic) because they also lower potassium.

You have an excess of aldosterone caused by zytiga.

Increasing the dose of prednisone could resolve the situation.

Other possibility is to start treatment with eplerenone (inspra) a drug which blocks the aldosterone receptors.

Once the aldosterone receptors are blocked the increased elimination of potassium by the urine will be reduced and the sodium and water retention will be also reduced leading to resolution of the edema.

Hi All, I don't know if this is the best place to post this, as I'm not familiar with the website. My name is Elke, I am Charles's spouse. Things went downhill super fast. His potassium went up to 3.3 but he felt worse and worse. Ultrasound if legs showed no blood cloths, MRI now further growth of cancer, blood tests showed nothing, and meanwhile Charles could barely move his legs anymore, candy 3 days later not even lift his arms. I think it took the Oncologist and Internal medicine specialist by surprise. More test were planned the coming days, results from urine tests came in too. But unfortunately, my dearest Charles passed away quietly while I was holding his hands at home, on Friday morning. So far, I have no idea what happened

Wishing you all lots of strength in fighting this terrible disease.

I am saddened by this. His name CSHobie is very familiar to me from his posts and reply interactions. I am so sorry too that you have lost him. I hope you can mend in time. That you can come to live without him and remember him in happy memories soon.

You might copy and paste your above reply and make it a post. If you would like I could do that for you. Please let me know.

My best wishes for you and your family.

Hi Elke,

I am so sorry for your loss. No words can change the loss you are feeling. Sending hugs and a big thank you for being there for Charles. At the end the the best we can hope for is to have a loved one holding our hand as we transition from this world to the next.

Hi Elke, I just read your message. That’s very very sad to hear about your husband. He had good things to say on this forum.

Did you ever find out what happened, what causes his passing? Several men on this site have low potassium also, like your Charles did. Maybe we could learn something based on what happened with Charles.

Again, in very sorry to hear what happened. You are both in my prayers.
