Tail…polypore fungi..my wife has been advised by her oncologists that it’s ok for her to add this supplement to her treatment cocktail..as you may recall I’m a metastatic PC survivor and was very surprised that it passed muster with the SOC crowd. Anyone endeavouring to try this somewhat dubious supplement..All opinions welcome. I know lots of the nutrition minded who swear by Chaga bracket fungi as well. Welcome Any comments thereupon as well…As an aside I’m a an edible mycohunter as well..my favorite is a local delight called agaricus crocodilinus.. not kidding..closely related to a host to yellow staining anise flavoured agarics..not so good overripened

Have seen no studies on Turkey Tail. Here is one on White Button. Mushrooms generally healthy so what is downside?

I've been using turkey tail and 4-5 other mushroom powders for about two years. Since I've been stable, hard to know what is working.

Wonderful that you posted this. Turkey Tail along with /Reishi, ABM, cordyceps, Shitake and Maitake are great healing fungi, because they contain Beta Glucans which modulate the Immune system.

I think anything that helps is worth doing. it does not matter what others say, because your body can heal with the right things, and everyone is different. Just my opinion and am still fighting PC with my husband.

Thank You

Yes, I’m very familiar with this mushroom and others. I make my own tinctures of Turkey tail. You can buy them, but it’s much more effective to make your own. If you prefer to purchase them, I recommend that you use Paul Stamets brand Host Defense. It is a little on the pricey side, but that’s the direction I personally would take.Turkey Tail is used a lot as an adjunct therapy in Japan.

Chaga is another exceptional mushroom. It’s antioxidants are literally off the scale. I make my own chaga tea. It’s easy to do and quite cost effective. The tea I make is a water extraction. It’s also quite a pleasant taste.

Reishi mushrooms are another excellent mushroom but their taste is quite bitter. You may not like the taste. Every now and then I’ll make a tea from it but it’s not something I take on a regular basis. If you can stand the taste, I say go for it.

Those are the three main ones I would consider.

You need to be a little cautious if drinking a lot of these teas because they are very high in oxalates. You shouldnt have any issues with bought capsules, it more like if you drink a lot of the teas. I take potassium citrate a couple of times a week to deal with that. It’s the citrate that deals with the oxalates. Other citrates are good as well. I take the potassium because I used to have irregular heartbeats and the potassium stopped that. Potassium administered in high doses is what is used to stop peoples hearts, just so you know. So don’t overdo that. I take about a gram which is well below anything with a serious effect.

This is what I do, not intended as advise for you to take. You need to discuss that with your medical team.

When I was receiving external and internal radiation, I decided to take mushroom suppliments. I believe I took Turkey Tail but it could have been another high in Beta Glucans. At that time I found studies that indicated immune boosting. Do not have acces to those studies now.

What is important is the amount of available beta glucans. These are available only in very small quantities in tea made from the fruiting bodies. The park next to me had a log in full flush of turkey tail. Turkey tail has no known poisonous look a likes so I figured it was safe to make my own tea or tincture. However researching on the internet I found that this would be essentially useless.

I checked out the Host Defense site (Paul has a good reputation in my area among the old hippies) and was very disappointed. The site has changed dramatically. Some good information is no longer there at all. I believe that this is because Host Defense is now a big company with a large marketing staff. The information on the old site agreed with what I had found elsewhere that ground up fruiting bodies were essentially worthless. At that time and now most of Host Defense products are still useless ground up mushrooms sold at every health food store. You can walk in the woods, find your own, dry them and have the same worthless stuff.

I found a company that now distributes in the US via a company whose name I forget. The manufacturer is Oriveda. Their products are extracts from mycelium (and I believe fruiting bodies as well) and they have the levels or beta glucans and other active ingredients published and third party verified. There is another company with a similar product but they only distribute to health care providers which I am not.

On the old site Paul had some bullshit explanation as to why testing of their products was not necessary. Have not looked recently. On the old site there was a mention that the only really useful supplements were extracted with water and alcohol. At that time extracted material was about !% of their products(just guessing at the actual number)

So even though Paul Stammets was a pioneer in promoting mushrooms for health in the US, I believe he was co-opted and that Host Defense products are essentially worthless, unless they are now making a properly extracted and tested product. I can grind up my own mushrooms, thank you.

That’s interesting. What info did you find on the internet that considered these useless? Do you have any links? I’d like to take a look.I wouldn’t just ground up the fruiting bodies. I’d actually do either a water or alcohol extraction, or indeed both.

Why do you think they’re not extracting correctly at Host Defense? Do you mean it’s not tested correctly so you can’t verify how good the product is?

This explains their reluctance to put certain measurements of their products because they believe it to be unreliable and misinformation. Is this what you’re referring to?

it was 8 years ago so i would need to start over and Host Defense changed their site entirely. Used to have good information. I would have to start over again. There were several studies on beta glucans and the amounts found effective were much higher than what HD would provide. What really turned me off was his BS explanation as to why testing is not important. Also that the old site said extraction was the only good method and at that time most of their shit was just ground up mushrooms. Do not have time to check for a while, have many business fires to fight. I took off for a little over a month and everything was in ruins when I got back.

Interesting. Five years ago, I began taking a daily mixture of 5 different mushroom powders, including Turkey Tail. No colds or other ailments since. My wife started nearly 4 years ago. Ditto. Whether providence, luck or coincidence, I will continue.
