PSA down from 6.17 to 4.4 in 16 months

My friend was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December 2020. He was given the option of being on active surveillance or radio therapy. He chose to be on active surveillance. He changed his diet to a whole food plant based diet. He gave up sugar completely. He started drinking a glass of cruciferous juice every day. He has lost weight. The oncologist is very surprised at the PSA coming down so much purely because of diet. I thought this might be inspirational to some of you - lifestyle changes will definitely help whatever stage you may be in.

It is inspiring.

Thank you. He has been very strict. No animal products and no sugar. Cruciferous vegetable juice everyday and whole plant based foods only.

I turned vegetarian days after my diagnosis. I have since added fish.

With an untreated prostate, some of the PSA may be due to BPH. It's possible that the new diet has reduced inflammation, resulting in a PSA reduction. There is no way of knowing the PCa contribution to those before/after numbers, but it does appear that his cancer is indolent.

Do you know what his Gleason score was in 2020? 3+3? But would a Gleason 6 be offered radiation? Perhaps 3+4? Has he had a repeat biopsy?

For most men in this group (advanced PCa), active surveillance was never an option. Is there an active surveillance group? The stories here will keep you awake at night. Most PCa cases do not progress much. No need to assume the worst.

Best to your friend, -Patrick

His score was 3+4. I only mentioned it here as the plant based diet and the cruciferous vegetables and juice has made a big difference for him. I understand that this group is advanced PC but some lifestyle changes may help

Men with advanced PCa are often highly motivated to make lifestyle changes and many have made the shift to a plant based diet.

Unfortunately the MEAL Phase III intervention trial showed that there was little effect on cancer progression for men on active surveillance.

Thank you for the links. Something seems to be working for him. Let us see what the next 6 months of this lifestyle does to his PSA.

Mine was 3+4 fourteen years ago after robotic surgery. On the high end my PSA was 4.3 I’m all in the fruits and veggies but this sleeping giant is nothing to mess with. What ever you decide on good luck we are all in this together.

in reply to nextphase

Thank you - understood that it is a sleeping giant. The discipline about his diet and lifestyle is not easy but he has been maintaining it. No animal products, no sugar, only whole plant based foods and cruciferous vegetable juice every day.

Has it helped much? Thanks

Let me clarify the "no sugar" part. Does he eat whole fruits at all? Apples, peaches, grapefruit, etc.?

in reply to dhccpa

He eats some fruits - mangoes, pears and pomegranates. Those fruits which have shown to have had an impact on reducing or preventing cancer.

In my view what is really helping him is the cruciferous vegetable juice (a couple of glasses) that he has everyday.

It is also not having any animal products at all.
