Saturday night, date night at the ER

Took my Jeff to ER last night.

He was experiencing excruciating breakthrough pain for most of the day yesterday. He hurt so bad that merely changing positions reduced him to tears. His leg weakness was more significant, he felt weak in general, he had another (very brief) dizzy episode, he wasn’t feeling well overall (he said he felt the worst he has felt in a long while), he was miserably cold and despite the multiple thick blankets layered on him he couldn’t get warm, and his throat hurt.

I took his temperature and it was only 96.8.

As he had so many other things going on, when his temp didn’t even register as normal, we put in a call to the on call oncologist.

While we waited for oncologist to call back, I took his temp again and it was up to 100.4.

The oncologist directed us to the ER for labs. We needed to have his white blood cell count checked to ensure there wasn’t an infection lurking.

By the time we got to the hospital, Jeff’s fever was up to 101.1. He had taken Tylenol prior to leaving, nonetheless his fever was trending up. His blood pressure and O2 stats checked ok, but his heart rate was a bit fast. They attributed that to his increased pain.

As per hospital protocol, they swabbed Jeff for COVID during triage, however we had to return to the waiting room until the ER’s on call doctor could order the labs that Jeff needed.

Screwy system we thought, but the oncologist that sent us to the ER didn’t (and couldn’t have as per policy) order the labs before we arrived.

About two hours later, we were still waiting for them to draw Jeff’s blood.

A nurse finally came out and called Jeff’s name. However, in lieu of taking him to a room, she took him over to one of the little cubicles they have set up in the waiting room to monitor vitals.

It was at that time they also disclosed Jeff had tested positive for COVID!

Jeff has COVID!!!

The nurse finished checking his vitals and they took Jeff away to the super secret secluded COVID waiting room. He was no longer allowed to have visitors and they promptly separated us.

Jeff texted from said waiting room and said there was one guy back there coughing/hacking his brains out and then they brought a woman in who was sobbing.

As I had obviously been directly exposed to COVID, after they took Jeff back, I also got checked into the ER so I could get tested for COVID too.

Meanwhile, they listened to Jeff’s chest and lungs, both sounded great! They also did a chest xray and that too looked great.

Originally Channing and I took Jeff to ER. Due to Omicron, Mayo has modified their visitor policy again. Only one visitor is allowed. I stayed with Jeff and sent Channing back home.

After I was swabbed, Channing came back to get me around 9:30 p.m. As we waited to hear Jeff’s lab results, my COVID test came back NEGATIVE!

At around 1:30 a.m. Jeff texted and they were sending him home!!! His labs looked fantastic! His medical woes were not cancer related and although he does have COVID, his case is mild enough he can comfortably quarantine at home.

Despite it being late, I was so happy to go get him and take him home.

Glad turned out this well. Any idea where/how Jeff caught it; and thankfully you were spared!

We don’t exactly know where he was exposed. It seems to be everywhere. Jeff still works full time and we are routinely at Mayo, goodness knows when or how.

He’s amazing to keep working . Wow! 👏👏😎

Well … Drake, our 21 year old son, tested positive for COVID yesterday.

We now believe that Drake inadvertently exposed Jeff.

Although Drake just tested positive, we think COVID with him is at the end of its run.

Drake is getting over a “bad cold”. He only had congestion and a runny nose - never occurred to him it would be COVID.

Basically, if Jeff hadn’t tested positive, we would have never known Drake had it too.

I’m scheduled at 9:30 tomorrow to be retested.

Wow! Thanks pancake . You describe things so well . Was he vaccinated? How is his pain level now? Was the covid temp driving that pain? Jeff is tuff . So are you . I’m happy you’re not positive . You are his Angel.. I appreciate this high form of love ..It is really beautiful to see . This APC is a beast when it runs over us . He has love with you and he kids ,and the new pup . ? ❤️❤️❤️ I hope that he can ditch out of that high pain? Take care 😔✌️🕊

We are both vaccinated. Pfizer x2 + booster.

For the past couple weeks he has been struggling with breakthrough pain. I don’t think all of it is COVID related, although some of it certainly is. We have a palliative care appointment at the end of the month. It might be time to tweak his drug regimen.

Once we realized he was running fever he has been able to stay ahead of it by taking Tylenol. When he had fever, his pain didn’t seem heightened, however, he had a tough time regulating his body temp. Thankfully, this appears resolved.

Thank you for your continued support.

It’s Good then that he was vaccinated ..my thermostat is also broken ..Hypogonadism has its own set of charms . I get both hot and cold easily . That’s scary when you can’t see someone inside the hospital due to covid . I’m happy that he is home . My best to the kids also . It’s tuff seeing dad hurt .May ol mighty God Bless Jeff with mercy ! 🙏💔😩

Glad to hear he has recovered from Covid. Most people get through it fine, as long as they are vaccinated.

I have two friends in their 80s who both got Covid. One of them has lung cancer. She is very compromised and has a lot of lung damage. She said it was the like the mildest cold she ever had.

Light and love for your sweet friend with lung cancer. Relieved to hear they both got through COVID.

After a false negative rapid test and a 3+ day wait for pcp results, we found out my husband has COVID also. My test was inconclusive and yesterday’s was negative. My symptoms were only that I had a slight headache for a day.

He is beginning to feel better but spent 8 days in bed, lost 10 pounds, and slept all of the time. We are both vaccinated but not boosted. Since he had a negative test, we weren’t thinking COVID and seeing his decline I was certain this was the beginning of the end. I was actually happy to see his positive test result because it explained his rapid decline.

Hope Jeff heals quickly!

Jeff’s biggest {COVID} complaint is that his throat hurts terribly bad. Aside from that, he appears to have a very mild case.

We are vaccinated Pfizer x 2 + booster.

While in the ER, I heard myself say, “well at least it’s {only} COVID.” Wait. What?! 🤦‍♀️🤣

Like you, I was terribly worried before they diagnosed COVID.

So grateful your husband is starting to feel better.

I’m thinking that he will be immune now after having the covid and being vaccinated too? 🙏

My god the fun never ends. I'm glad the end of this particular story has a relatively good ending. With our PCa lurking things like this are a major scare.

Has our PCa taken off to the races?

We have covid will our co-morbidity put us in the ICU?

I'm glad for you two that he (and you) dodged the bullet on this one.

How is the pain?

In regards to COVID, he has been super achy all over. Similar to how one would feel if they had the flu… achy, hurts to move, feels like he has been hit by a truck.

In regards to prostate cancer, we aren’t sure nor was his oncologist. It could be a number of things causing it and unfortunately the heightened pain has been significant.

We see his palliative care team this month. It might be time tweak his drug regimen.

We all default to cancer side effects over any other possibilities as the cause. Your post is so important to remind us that it is not necessarily the cancer that may be causing issues.

Have you and Jeff gone to a pain clinic to see if they can better mange his back pain? I’ve start using the Mayo pain clinic and they have help me significantly.

Stay Strong!

We are local to Rochester and doctor with Mayo.

Jeff doesn’t use a pain clinic, however he has an incredible palliative care team that address all concerns regarding his pain.

Its just been in the past couple of weeks that the breakthrough pain became problematic.

We have an appointment this month with palliative care. It might be time to tweak his drug regimen again.

Thanks for sharing and glad that Jeff is going to be OK. I’ve got multiple bone Mets, but so far my meds are holding things in check. I know EXACTLY what you are describing because I was in the same place as Jeff a few weeks ago….and the back pain was terrible. I’ve still got some soreness but it’s being controlled with Advil. I was told that the pain is fairly common with Omicron, but it scared Jennifer and me just like it did the two of you. Hopefully, Jeff recovers soon but remember to get rechecked yourself in a few days. It’s pretty common that the first test comes back negative snd then a few days another test comes back positive. Not trying to scare you….you just don’t need any more “surprises”. Our best to you with a hug. Jim and Jennifer.

Thank you so much. I appreciate you sharing your experience, especially about the pain.

I’m looking at Wednesday to be retested. Fingers crossed!

Also, our son in law was really sick with CV-19 this past summer and the monoclonal antibodies got him feeling better within a few hours. They are readily available in a lot of places if you ask. Good luck to both of you ….including Jeff in our evening prayers. Jim and Jennifer

Today Jeff started 1 of 3 Remdesivir infusions.

He was scheduled to have chemo tomorrow (Tuesday), but they have pushed that back at least 14 days.

Jeff’s primary complaint is his throat hurts soooo bad. He has been able to stay ahead of the fever and he was able to rest a great deal today which helped with aches/pain.
