Bone fractures

Hi everyone

My father did decide to do chemo and is almost through his 6 treatments . He’s done fairly well and has had minimal side effects. Unfortunately, however, he continues to deal with painful and debilitating fractures.. most recently he’s developed a stress fracture in his knee and is immobilized . Do you have any experience with this or suggestions on management? This is really effecting his quality of life

TIA

Is he taking something to strengthen his bones (Xgeva or Zometa)?

Hello, I take a maintenance dose of Prolia (denosumab). In stronger doses it is called Xgeva. If you remember your high school biology, you know bones are always regenerating themselves. Osteoblasts build new bone and osteoclasts absorb old bone. An injection of Prolia every six months should strengthen your Dad's osteoblasts and make his bones a little thicker. That plus daily Vitamin D and daily Calcium (with or without magnesium) should prevent any type of skeletal related event. IMHO, Prolia has fewer side effects than Zometa (zoledronic acid) which is the other common bone strengthening agent. Good luck!

If he has not done so already, he may want to see a bone specialist. I fractured my pelvis in June and was using a walker for 2 months afterwards. The surgeon referred me to a Physician's Assistant specializing in bone health. She recently started me on a medication (Alendronate) to strengthen bones.

Hey Stumpgirl , he needs a dexa scan to see bone density . I went into osteopenia and I’m on prolia and some simple bone nutrients . Exercise is also key . I was on prolia over two yrs when a nuclear scan shows I had a non displaced fractured L-3 rib .? I didn’t even know it? Prolia was supposed to prevent this . ?
