This link has some info about salvage brachy and negative side effects:

Salvage SBRT could be other treatment to consider.

Thanks tango,

It seems as if there are a wide range of studies discussing salvage brachytherapy after EBRT. Dr. Zelefsky at MSK is recognized to be excellent…I hope and pray that the procedure will at least arrest the growth of the lesion in my prostate. Possibly being a cure!

There appears a lot of guys who do RP then either go on HT and/or do some form of radiation. Curious in what you have done!

I had HDR-Brachy with SpaceOar with no short- or long-term effects, other than burning urination the first evening, and some urgency the first two weeks... very well tried-and-true procedure.

Hi Tim,

Your treatment sounds if it was good!

Thanks for your reply…

I find that guys have their first PCa treatment with Brachytherapy and IMRT…However, this will be “salvage” treatment since i had EBRT in 2004-5. This is a recurrence. Memorial Sloan kettering (NYC) is recommending that i have HD brachytherapy now. So it would be having more radiation! I am concerned about the toxicities having radiation twice…

Ok, I see Billy… the comments I’ve read on salvage radiation with HDR-BT are that sometimes the procedure is done over two sessions instead of one to lower the peak radiation received and spread the dose out over a longer period of time. I even talked to a person who’d also had radiation for colon cancer, and still had two sessions of salvage HDR-BT. I like it because it offers local control of the dose and less beam scattering.

Tim,

It’s scheduled to be one week apart. My hope and prayer is that it will arrest the growth of the cancer (lesion) and possibly cure it! Don’t know…

My guess is that doing the procedure in the way you did has a good possibility for a cure!

When I had it done they put in a spaceoar. I haven't had any adverse effects and its been almost six years.Prayers!

JammJ,

Thanks for your reply…

Was your treatment “salvage”? this is salvage high dose brachytherapy…I was treated in 2004-5 with EBRT…This is a BCR…

I had the HDR Brachy in two sessions a week apart. This was after 25 sessions of IGRT and 5 months of ADT.Literally NO side effects. I was sore for sure the day if the procedure and the next day just a little.

And to be honest all soreness was from the position you are put in NOT the actual procedure.

Do not worry and go into the procedure with the mind set of no issues other than what I stated.

You will do fine, I am sure

teacher,

Thanks for responding…

Did you have Salvage HD brachytherapy?

I have a BCR so they are recommending this salvage treatment… My original treatment 15 years ago was EBRT…I’m concerned about more radiation and having some side effects…either acute or late toxicities…

THIS MAY NOT BE APPLICABLE TO YOUR SITUATION. (OLD POST)

Greetings: Radiation - I've posted this before so to those people who have already seen this please forgive me.

I had 8 weeks of salvage radiation to "the bed". 5 days a week (not weekends) for 8 weeks minus 1 day for a total of 39 sessions at MSKcc. The actual radiation was like getting an x-ray by my dentist. I never had any side effects during the whole 39 sessions. However, 2 years later my left urinary tract was "fried" as per my urologist (or from passing prior kidney stones he was not sure). So, I had to have a urinary stent placed up my urinary tract (through my willy which is really nothing - sounds terrible but it's nothing) to aid in passing my urine (which was never a problem anyway). So I had stents in and out every three months for many years and now I'm stent free, However today 15% of urine from left kidney and 85% from right kidney, but not a problem. So make sure you get a good radiologist. Also, I don't know if this would apply to you but guys here recommend SPACEOAR HYDROGEL to be inserted for protection of parts of your body. Make sure you ask your R.O. about the spaceoar and make sure you ask here on this forum before getting fried.

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.

Hi j-o-h-n,

I talked with Dr. at MSK and says he will use it. my concern is that i originally had EBRT and now HD brachytherapy. Possibly my prostate is “fried” from my original EBRT…However, i have not had any after effects in 15 years! Good or bad sign! Any thoughts….

Thanks,

Bill
