What is normal time to overcome leakage after surgery? Are their other exercises besides Kegel?

There is no single "normal" time; some people never have a leakage problem at all, and other people have one for the rest of their lives (with some medical options to help that); I was told that what improvement happens can take as long as a year and a half, and in my case I made improvement for over a year, but not to a satisfactory point, and some time later had male sling surgery, which resulted in much great further improvement. I don't remember when you had surgery (if you have ever posted that) but give yourself some time!

Thanks for the reply. Surgery was only a month ago. Did you have to wear diapers for a year or is there other absorbent pads that can be worn in your underwear? Jerry

I did have to wear diapers; if you leaking less you can wear pads--in my case, until the sling surgery, it was diapers; not the pleasantest time in my life

I did try feedback thing--they hook up electrodes to you and have you do the kegels, and that gives you some direct feedback as to how effectively you are doing them; I was doing them pretty effectively but still leaking, hence the surgery eventually

if you're only a month out, relax, you've got time, it's almost certain there will be some significant improvement even in the first few months, and then it can continue for a longer time but maybe at a slower pace

good luck!

Congrats on getting your surgery behind you. I hope you’re starting to feel more normal.

I never felt right wearing diapers and pads were hard for me to use. I tried a few varieties of diapers. Some worked better than others.

For me, the best product was washable cloth underwear with a washable pad sewn in. I ordered them online. from a company called “liberty life”. It might be worth checking their site out.

In my case, I only needed the diapers for a couple of months. I still had very minor leakage when I coughed or laughed but nothing that required special underwear or diapers. When I later had salvage radiation, I just wore these cloth underwear/diaper for a few weeks

As folks have said, everyone is different. I had an RP in October and bought a large box of diapers from Costco and used exactly two of them. I then moved to pads and would experience the odd involuntary squirt when not focussing. I found that doing the kegel exercises helped greatly - stopping in mid stream and starting again etc. This gave me increasing control to the point where I'm almost back to normal. It's still a mind control challenge to fart however...

I did not see any improvement in the 1st 4 months. Lots of pads and diapers.Very depressing. Started doing research on surgical options. Then lo and behold I started seeing improvement. (lots of kegels). So now, even after SRT, I would say I am 98% continent. Sometimes I need to concentrate at times to stop from squirting, but from where I was those 1st 4 months, I am very satisfied. I do not use any pads. I would say I saw improvement through 15 months after surgery.

Keep the faith, don't give up!

Almost 3 years now. Still use light pads almost daily. Leak and dribble bad when tired.
