How to boost immune system without feeding the cancer

I've been concerned about my low levels of white blood cells, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, red blood cells etc Most everything is below the normal range by a little or a lot and the ratios of things like neutrophils/lymphocytes look very bad. Maybe the cbc results are all just part of a downward progression that I cant resolve with just food and supplements but I just thought I'd ask for other people's insights.

I'd like to raise/improve these numbers if its possible through food and supplements. Here is an article saying how to increase white blood cells but I think some of the items taken in supplement form might help grow advanced prostate cancer.

Here's the article link:

I wanted to see if anyone can advise which of the items in this article I should avoid or at least reduce quantity.

I've also added my cbc results for reference:

George,

I will give you the experience of my wife. Late 2015 she had a recurrence of a solitary plasmacytoma, but with shingles. We went to our doctor for something to control the shingles pain. Without our knowledge, an ambulance was called because she had chest pain. (She had vagus nerve pain due to the shingles.) The hospital was 4 minutes away. I got there 15 minutes before she did.

The ER gave her morphine, but at the end of the day, she was virtually out of it & still compaining of pain. So she was placed on the cancer floor (because of the plasmacytoma), for pain management. For 3 days, they used a combination of hydromorphone & morphine. They could never figure out how to get the pain controlled while at the same time getting her to the point where she could walk out of the hospital.

Finally, with a very groggy wife, I was given a prescription for Gabapentin & Hydromorphone. It was Xmas eve & we raced to CVS. Got there 2 minutes before they were closing for the holiday.

For the next 2 months, my job was to find the combination of drugs that would control the shingles pain. Eventually, my son suggested astragalus. It is an immunomodulator. Within 2 days, the shingles pain was gone.

Shingles is a opportunistic condition that emerges when the immune system is weak. Her oncologist said that 70% of his multiple myeloma patients have had shingles - sometime for as long as 9 months.

It's a single case, but I was impressed.

Thanks Patrick, I'm familiar with gabapentin for neuropathy as an "off-label" treatment. I've also read about Astragalus for the last few years but didn't start taking it until two weeks ago. I got a bottle from the brand - Oregon's Wild Harvest" which looks like one of the purest supplement brands. This pill comes with 750mg of astragalus and 450mg of reishi mushrooms. I'll try taking three a day, which they suggest, instead of the one a day I've been taking. Makes me hypotisize the gapepentin / astragalus pain relief connection might help my Mom with her neuropathy....worth a try I suppose.

Are you also suggesting that the Astragalus might improve the cbc/immune cell blood counts?

I hope your wife is doing well and I'm glad you were able to resolve her pain. I asked my PCM if I should get the shingles and measles (which I have no immunity too) vaccines and he always waffles and kicks the can down the road because of fear from my low immune system and protocol saying I'm too young for shingles vaccine. I then say, I have APC so I have to be treated differently.

Did you at least give the kid a raise in his allowance?

GeorgeGlass,

Patrick mentioned Shingles and I am getting ready to take the Shingrix-- new shingles vaccine. Shingles is quite painful as Patrick described, and if you haven't had it, talk with your MD. My Lymphs and Neutrophils have dropped a bit on Zytiga, so I am taking the vax. It just made sense to me.... Why wait for disaster to happen??

Thanks Don, I remember a couple other guys on this forum saying that they got the shingles vaccine and didn't have a problem. Did you read any of those posts?

Have you read about anyone getting measles vaccine/booster now that it's spreading around the country again? I have no immunity to it in a recent test to see my levels of antibodies.

I believe in staying up on vaccinations--I had the Pneumovax and will be getting Shingrix...why invite trouble?? Talk with your MD about getting the vaccine or booster...see below:

Ask your doctor if you qualify for Provenge.

Thanks Tango, how do that connect to my situation? Does it boost the immune system? I'm curious if anyone else has numbers like mine. My MO says my numbers aren't out of the ordinary for someone with metastatic cancer.

Provenge has an immune cell activator called macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM‑CSF).

I'll talk to my MO about that. thanks.

Thanks Nalakrats, I was worried about the zinc supplement for my gastro-intestinal problems but it's about 75 mg, which is probably a low enough dose to not cause problems. I was also concerned about yogurt/dairy but I suppose yogurt is much better than something like milk.

So, Methyl Folate wont feed the cancer? I do need to raise my levels of folate somehow...

OK, great to know. I do the b12 separate and I'll add the methyl folate. Going to adjust to Zinc Chelate in low doses. Every little bit of knowledge helps, I believe.

Hi Nal,

"Eat more yogurt" is mentioned in this article, what is your comment?

Do you eat yogurt, specifically ones that contain probiotics?

Thank you Nal, I didnt know what is this, so searched the web:

"Sauerkraut is finely cut raw cabbage that has been fermented by various lactic acid bacteria. It has a long shelf life and a distinctive sour flavor, both of which result from the lactic acid formed when the bacteria ferment the sugars in the cabbage leaves."

Can we made this at home?

I know for sure that cabbage has a potent anticancer features!

I was on hormone therapy. Of course, not all men have to receive it, but you have to consider that testosterone production drops by more than 1% a year. In addition, there is a parallel decline in estradiol and an increase in hormone-binding proteins, so the problems worsen with each year of life. My TRT Scottsdale xcellr8.health/testosterone... therapy started a year ago. Dihydrotestosterone is a stimulant for its growth as the cells of the gland are androgen-dependent. Men who have been castrated before puberty are known to have neither hyperplasia nor prostate cancer. Does testosterone affect the incidence of prostate cancer?
