Baby it’s hot sometimes
They never went away for me. After 6 months of never getting into REM sleep because the hot flashes woke me to sweat-soaked sheets every 20 minutes, I took a break from Lupron. Quality of life matters to me.
Once testosterone levels were in the normal range the hot flashes were the last toxicity to disappear. They took 10-14 days.
During my second bout of castration I tried gabapentin. It helped, initially, but I had to keep increasing the dose. I started at 100 mg and got two nights sleep before the hot flashes returned. 200 mg bought another few nights. I ended up at 600 mg and getting no sleep again.
I'm discussing use Depo Provera intramuscular injection 400mg ONCE with my oncologist as I resume the torture for the third time.
Good luck. I'm told that my case is exceptionally severe. "Multiple Grade 3 toxicities" is what my oncologist wrote in my file and in a letter to my PCP. Hopefully your hot flashes will diminish or respond to gabapentin better than mine did.
It may get better over time, or not. There are several solutions (none of them perfect):
• Acupuncture
• Estrogen patches
• Effexor (venlafaxine)
• Gabapentin
Some doctors favor Megace patches, but that has more risk of side effects. "Natural" remedies have bombed out in clinical trials. Estrogen has other benefits (e.g., reducing bone loss, reducing testosterone production), but it encourages growth of breast tissue, so tamoxifen should be taken with it.
Tried Megace, worked for a while. Found venlafaxine worked better for me.
I am 5 months into hot flashes which I prefer to call Power Surges. They were so powerful for the first few months but they have really slowed down recently. Having a small fan next to your favorite chair and on your nite stand has gotten me through it quite nicely. Good luck n Power Surge on Brother!
The hot flashes bothered me....a lot....the sweat would literally drip off my face. And for some reason, when I first laid down in bed I would get a hot flash. My first Lupron injection was for 30 days, my second was for 3 months, I had my third 3 month injection about 3 weeks ago. Ever since then they have all but disappeared. I still get one when I exert myself (work out). I had my first radiation treatment yesterday and asked my new radiation oncologist about this. His reply was that for some reason the makeup of the Lupron is inconsistent between doses, he doesn't know why. He said it could either be that or that my body has adjusted to it after 5 months. I don't have any technical data on it, I'm just relating my experience.
I take Mgace also called Megestrol and bye bye hot flashes. Some say magace promotes pca growth but im here 8 years later after Dx with no hot flashes. I'll throw evey med i take away but not my magace! I tried stopping it a few times and the hot flashes returned.
10 months in Zytiga hot flashes all but gone after the 4th month. I wish I could trade off the other side effects for the hot flashes again .
Estradiol patches work great for me, I was getting severe hot flashes coupled with a sickly feeling happening hourly (I counted 15 one day). Dr. Myers put me on estradiol patches and it worked like a charm. Boob growth has been minimal, I exercise a lot and keep my weight in check, and at my age who cares, sure beats hot flashes.

I found a fan on me at night helped!
Hot flashes became milder after four months on Lupron. After two years they were very manageable and disappeared after 4 years.
I use Indica before bedtime. It allows me to sleep the through the night without any hot power surges.
Just finished 18 months of Lupron, last 90 day shot was in May. hot flashes, intolerance to heat and increased sweating still in play albeit less, still, annoying. My wife learned to appreciate dual climate controls in our cars. Other than tolerating these side affects, only a fan blowing on me would help or stepping outside on the back deck in winter! There are drugs which may alleviate somewhat these SEs but I figured since there was no disruption to my life, work, travel, exercise, just dealt with it.
Similar i had bad hot flashes every 45 mins, 24 hrs a day. Tried soy, accupunture, Chinese herbs. I still have them, but not as often and not as severe. This since 2011. The only thing that worked for me was venlafaxine (effexer), which was recommended by a
nurse, not the Doc. We are all different, keep trying until something works. Good luck.
The generic venlafaxine eliminated about 90% of the sweats and hot flashes for me.
Geez I guess I hit the Hot Flash jackpot... cause I had very few in the beginning. It's the luck of the draw... Like getting fxxxing Pca.
Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.
