Thanks for posting this - very sobering! It is amazing to me that many people are cynical about studies sponsored by Big Pharma, but the same conspiracy theorists do not think twice about the supplement industry and the internet mail-order sites, like Life Extensions, that make a fortune off of the fears of sick people.
They make a valid point about the importance of peer review and the prestige of important journals and conferences. There is also the problem of patients who do not know how to interpret the published research. Most peer-reviewed published research is for the purpose of generating hypotheses for further study. Lab and mouse studies are not meant for patients to act upon. Yet everyday, on this forum and similar forums, patients post such studies and declare they have acted upon them. Over 90% of mouse studies are later reversed by clinical trials. Sometimes they are later shown to harm human beings, or they may interfere with other therapies. few patients understand levels of evidence, and why observational studies often get reversed by randomized clinical trials. I personally understand the desperation of cancer patients and caregivers, but safety is a minimal consideration.
It reminds me when I used to fake foreplay...
Good Luck and Good Health.
