Hi

As you know my dad has been diagnosed with APC and still a bone scan to go, but he has booked a trip for himself and my son to go to New York just before all this happened for April next year, he’s really upset as he’s been declined for all the insurance places he’s visited on the internet today. Does this mean he won’t be able to now go? Any advice or tips will be so welcome I don’t want him to stress about any of this on top of everything else.

Depending on how the cancer is going and where he is in treatment, he may be able to travel to NY. Next April is a long time from now. He may be at a spot in his treatments that he can travel.

For example, I have advanced cancer but I still go on exotic trips. I could not travel after I had surgery or while I was getting 38 rounds of radiation. Right now I am on Lupron and Zytiga. The first one is a shot I get once every six months. The other are pills I take every day. They do not require going to a hospital or clinic. When I told my medical team that I wanted to go diving, their only comment was to have fun.

I will be leaving soon for my second Scuba trip to the Caribbean this year. I get travelers (divers) insurance that covers if I break a leg (or get the bends from diving), but it does not cover anything for the cancer.

Hi

I really hope they get to go, fingers crossed, I suppose it is just a wait and see where he is in his treatment.

So lovely to hear that you enjoy life and do all that you do, inspirational

Cammie, I do believe treatment can be adjusted time wise so He can do the trip with your brother to NY. What kind of insurance , travel or health? Taking trips like this is why we do the treatments, so we can enjoy life, I went to Portugal between my 6th and 7th chemo. I did pay a bit extra for travel insurance in case I was not able to go at the time.

Cammie... I agree with Dan59. My oncologist is always ready to adjust my treatment schedule to accommodate a trip or event. Part of treatment or care is the psychological component. Just as important.

I have world wide insurance through my UK Nationwide building society flexi plus account and pay about a £120 extra a year for my advanced metastastic PCa. Before that I was having to pay over £200 for a week or two week holiday

I remember when I was first diagnosed with Adv PC, I too was worried about travel etc. And I can't answer for his exact case, but I have learned to worry less and I understand that even APC moves relatively slowly. So I have spent the last couple of years since diagnosis traveling all over the world. The only time I couldn't was the month after surgery. I'm now planning a trip to Norway in March. So, I know it's a scary time, but unless he is suffering from bone mets, and moving around is painful, I wouldn't think he would need to worry about his trip at all. What insurance is he trying to get that he's been declined for?

Hi

We have an appointment Monday for bone scan, so not sure if it has spread. Think it’s travel insurance he’s been looking at, they seem to decline him when he mentioned cancer! So frustrating.

Lovely to hear you are enjoying life, enjoy Norway! I am definitely visiting there one day.

It might be international health insurance maybe. Travel insurance is usually just a check box on the airline reservation page, so they don't really ask any questions. But since the UK has NHS, perhaps he wants additional health insurance coverage when traveling to the US. My Canadian friends do that too.

I just had insurance for our recent cruise. Insurancewith.com are really good, they ask all the right questions. Price was £196 for both myself and my wife.
