Sorry to hear about it getting worce. I am not an expert, in fact I have made some mistakes in the past about social security disability that I wrote about when I was first diagnosed with Stage 4 D1 Ductal cancer. I will just stick to some basic information taken from the social security web page that may help you.

There is a "Compassionate Allowances Conditions program" that makes it easier to apply if you meet certain medical conditions. For prostate cancer Please look up form:

"DI 23022.282 Prostate Cancer - Hormone Refractory Disease – or with Visceral Metastases". This falls under their Compassionate Allowances Conditions program.

secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms....

Here is some additional information from the SSI web page: disability-benefits-help.or...

"Specifically, to meet the SSA’s prostate cancer listing, your medical records must show one of the following: The disease has progressed or returned despite initial treatment; Your cancer has metastasized (spread) to internal organs; You have oat or small-cell carcinoma".

Please treat this information as a starting point. There are a number of members here that could give you better information. Please note that even if you do not qualify based on the above, you can still apply.

Because my prostate cancer has metatasized to my bones and considered Stage IV, I was able to apply for the disability SSA. It was processed in about 6 weeks. I had not worked for over a year when I applied to SSA back payed from six months after I stopped working up till the time I qualified. That was a nice big bonus check that we had not anticipated.

Social Security Disability and life threatening cancer, you can get approved more quickly, depending on the district and reviewer. In theory you can apply by filling out the paperwork and submitting it yourself. I felt that having some legal help was worthwhile, so I used a firm that specializes in disability claims, and it cost one-third of my first check. The first check covers from the 'approved' date of the disability to present, so it can be substantial. The benefit to me was that I was fairly certain that I wouldn't have to deal with an appeal and the associated delay. The process took about 8 months for me. Your results may vary. Best of luck. Here is a link, I am NOT endorsing them, just for information - ssdrc.com/ssd-prostate-canc...

Debbie,

Was he a veteran and was he in Vietnam?

No Joel

It's the Compassionate Care Program. Very simple to apply, no lawyers needed. You just have to have the correct paperwork. Just prove that you have recurrent cancer, that's it. Joe

Are there age requirements? I was diagnosed in September 2011. I have been working part time ( 17-18 ) hours a week to help make ends meet. I just can't do it any more. Now I have a incomplete break in the neck of my femoral bone. I may need an operation to fix it, pins and plates or a new hip. I am 73.

I have stage 4 PC with bone metastasis.

Hi Dennis,

I'm 57, and been receiving SSD for two years now. My major regret was going through a lawyer. I had to explain to the lawyer why I was eligible, so he could explain it to the judge. So, I lost 25% of my first check. Quite a sum, since they pay you back to your original disability date.

Peace, Joe

In the UK, fairly straightforward. A 40 page (yes, 40 page) questionnaire, and if you qualify you get Personal Independence Payment to help with mobility and living costs. Around $160 a week.

If you have terminal cancer, they're pretty quick in responding. I got an answer in 4 days.

I was told that if he was 66 he could not collect disability because he was at full retirement per ssa and yes cancer is a diagnosis which is easy to apply for disability as long as you can show proof ...call your ss office ...

thanks, he is only 60..

Do you that have received disability yet think I would qualify yet? I have Stage 4 metastatic advanced disease detected in 4 areas of my bones. No spread to any organs yet, which looks that would not qualify yet. I am 61, hoping to get on Disabilty before I get "too" disabled. If I retire on straight Social security benefits at 62 I only just now have to 20 quarters required and it will be reduced due to my Government pension. 50-60% of my current work salary would be nice to collect for a while.
