ADHD coaching

I am looking for a video to learn how to coach an ADHD adult. My wife is having trouble getting her life together and she asked me to help her. Any idea about it? Thanks!

Hello! It's really cool you're showing up for your wife when she needs support. It's probably not a good idea for you to be her coach though. Coaching is a professional skill that requires training (most coaches are certified) and objective detachment -- coaches support the person and their trial and errors, which is a roll a spouse or family member can't be objective in. After awhile, the person being coached can sometimes learn how to "self-coach", but that doesn't replace the need for a professional to get there.

While it's not really appropriate for you to be her coach, you can absolutely help her find a coach! (If that's how she wants to proceed!) Researching professionals and following through can be a challenge with ADHD, so getting accountability or a hand at that early stage is a game changer. adhdcoaches.org is a good place to start along with the international coaching federation website.

Also, don't underestimate how powerful it is to have a spouse who's being supportive of self-work! If you're onboard with her journey, and open and curious and nonjudgmental while she's trying to figure stuff out, that's huge. Having support and help around sticking to new habits and routine and structure makes a world of difference! Not to mention, a lot more than most of us are offered. Often non-adhd spouses can be the source of pushback while they struggle to understand why the journey is even necessary. It's not their fault necessarily, but it does make everything a lot harder.

Glad to hear your wife has a partner who's already seeing the value in her investments! Good luck!

You definitely do not want to be her coach. Just have her google ADHD coaches. There are a ton of coaches out there who advertise. Just so you know, there is often a fine line between coaching and therapy. I used my therapist as a coach. And since my insurance covered therapy, my fees were kept down. Some people benefit from therapy and coaching and medications .... at least for a while ... Is your wife on meds?

This is a link to Coaching with Brook, an ADHD coach. This is a free youtube series to help adults with ADHD. I work with one of her coaches now and it is expensive but also very valuable. Happy to share any free resources that have been shared with me. My coach also recommended these apps to help with staying accountable to a routine
