Superpower?

So I’ve come across some YouTube videos that describe ADHD as a type of “superpower “. Have you seen these videos and what’s your take on that?

I have seen a video like this. Personally, I’d say there are some strong positivities about having ADHD. For me, if I am really interested in something then I can throw myself into it and really excel and learn everything about it. But there are lots of struggles too for me that may also be related to my ADHD.

I guess for some people it could be a superpower but I believe that everyone has their own personal experience and unique challenges and strengths. X

I absolutely feel it is a “superpower”. I am able to do things that many cannot. For example, I graduated with my Bachelors at 19 and began teaching at the age of 20. I would take 24hr semesters and finish with a 4.0. Most people would think that’s humanly impossible (they didn’t want to approve me to take that many hours at once because my University never allowed it). That’s just one example. On a personal level, I feel like it’s a blessing and a curse all at once because my mind never shuts off. 😣

Wow! That’s impressive! Thanks for sharing! I always want to see both sides to ADHD - negative and positive. I know it’s a very difficult thing to deal with when operating in a square world when one is a squiggly kind of person. Congratulations on your accomplishments!! And thanks for sharing 🙂

Everyone has their own "super powers." Even those of us with ADHD have different strengths and weaknesses from each other. We are not our ADHD any more than any neuro-typical person is their particular challenges. And everyone has challenges, ADHD or not.

I feel that there are great strengths with ADHD, but they come at a cost. Sure I'm super efficient and get a ridiculous amount of work done, but I have very poor social skills. I aced school and college but have been fired from nearly every job I've had. I never forget where I park but I can't make friends. So, at least in my case, I like the 'powers' that I have, sure. I would not classify them as a wholly good thing, though, by any means.

Wow. Unfocused. You’re right. Let me ask you. Since you are aware of these difficulties, how do you try to manage differently?

I’ve always been a kind of to-my-self kinda person but I do have very selective, small group of friends. They now live in other states and with COVID19 is difficult to maintain a friendship. I’m trying to make new friends this year.
