Welcome, december_daisy! There are others here that can speak to the rewards of coaching better than I. However, I found myself in nearly your same situation a month ago, almost exactly. Im 41 now, was diagnosed early, stopped medication in my teens, re-diagnosed in July 2020, back on meds for a month now, starting a journey to make myself whole, and became interested in coaching. Sound familiar, 😉? I poked around for info and received quite a bit of positive feedback from others. Really, I didn't get anything back negative to note. I was seeking structure, routines, and creating an environment in my every day life which leverages my ADHD rather than ignoring or limiting it. So, I just signed up with a coach and had my first session. I have already learned some, can see the potential is great, and think it will be like most other things of any value in life... The more you put into it, the more you will get back in return!
Just wanted to share since our stories were so similar. Maybe it will help you, while considering coaching, knowing how others have already chosen that path! Good luck!
WOW! That's a fun coincidence. Thank you for letting me know of your positive experience with coaching. My goal is the same as yours - creating structure that doesn't get upended when life inevitably takes a sharp turn. I hope we both reach that potential that now seems not so far away.
I started coaching in July and it has been LIFE CHANGING! I can’t recommend it enough.
As to your question about it being enough, I guess that probably depends on how (for lack of a better term) “bad” your ADHD is.
I’m not on medication (although I take a caffeine pill and that’s been helping) because I’m still breastfeeding, but what I’ve observed is that even people who ARE on meds have the same problems I do whether or not they take them.
So for me, coaching has been a life-saver. My husband commented that, after just two weeks of coaching, I was “more sane than [I] had been in the last ten years!” (Still not sure how to feel about that though 🤣)
My coach is Kristen Carder at

She’s AWESOME! Even if you don’t hire her as your coach she has an awesome podcast about ADHD that has been huge for my improvement too.
Thanks for your reply! I just checked out her podcast, and I subscribed already. I am so ready to use my ADHD to my advantage! I just finished week 3 of my coaching (I signed up shortly after I posted my initial question) and it, too, has been LIFE CHANGING. Like, who knew these changes could be so simple? I'm blown away. Thanks for the podcast recommendation!
Can we get any out-of-network refund from PPO health insurance for therapies by an ADHD coach/academic therapist? As an incoming college freshman, is it better to hire an academic therapist who helps ADHD students, focusing on executive function but not using CBT? Thanks.
No not one insurance company will give you a cent for a coach. They are rare but their are psychologists that treat strictly ADHD or at least deal with it a lot. I have a therapist to keep me a bit more grounded. Call your insurance or look for a psychologist in your area that treats Adhd its simple. If your just looking to get amped up get a coach if you want knowledge and understanding take my advice
