I think so, I’m not sure I was prescribed a mood regulator for about a year to help with my impulsivity and mood. It was I forgot I think it was Gabapentin? He thought I was possibly a little bipolar.

YES and I thought "now I'm not the only one who thinks I'm Crazy)I have had some bad experiences with a few in the past to where I felt so weird in my head I laid down praying I would fall asleep and wake up "normal"ha lol.So am Very Skeptical! One time even went straight to Drs office in morning first thing and told the receptionist the Dr.was either trying to kill me or make me really nuts to be committed.SHE SENT ME A CERTIFIED LETTER NEXT DAY STATING WOULD NOT TREAT ME ANYMORE.lol

I was in shock at first later HAD to laugh at myself.

Right now I was prescribed RISPERDAL 1mg.

I have NOT been taking reguraly due to past experiences with these type meds and of course PLAY DR.(sound common?)and since didn't feel like anything more less placebo I just quit taking out of fear.I was hoping since new on here also I would hear about the"wonder drug"everyone with ADHD was taking but sounds as if NOT OUT THERE?This is what SCARES ME I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired everyday!!

I just want a so called "NORMAL BRAIN" and live a HAPPY STRESS FREE LIFE, FREE OF ANXIETY FROM WORRYING OVER NOTHING! SOMETIMES?

I want ENERGY and MOTIVATION most of all and to feel like I think others around me feel most of the time-NORMAL!!!😧

I had to stop taking the abilify since i gained a flipping pound in 2 weeks! And the doc gave me a vraylar script. That caused a psycho response... such agitation as I’ve NEVER experienced, no self mutilation, but I DID beat myself which hasn’t ever happened. Ive been self medicating since they took me off the adderall and it’s not working out and since I told the shrink about it, well he refuses to write for anything except anti psychotics and insists I go into a program. So I think I’ve screwed myself into no hope for any treatment that could possibly work for me. Painted myself into a corner again! Drat! And double drat!

I’m trying to figure something here but with my poor messed up Abby Normal type brain, well suggestions are welcome.

I love that people have been able to relate here, it’s hard not knowing anyone but my son who I passed this onto. Thanks for the responses

It can happen. It depends on what the target symptoms are. Antipsychotics are "thought organizing" medications so they can help with racing thoughts, impulsivity, hyperarousal, restlessness, poor concentration, etc. It's worth asking your doctor what she/he was thinking when prescribing.

Also, ADHD can occur with many other disorders, so the antipsychotic might be to tackle symptoms from that.

It's easy to focus on wanting a stimulant medication only to help with our symptoms. It takes patience to work with the doctors to get to the right combination that is right for us. And, sometimes it's more than one medication that has to be in place. So, I wouldn't give up yet. Learn more about what your prescribing doctor is doing and why. Ask questions. Chart your symptoms and side effects. Note when and how the medication works. Go into your next appointment with evidence for or against the medication and the dose. You can be a great source of information that will help in the long run.
