I am a woman with a diagnosis of combined adhd last year (aged 56 yrs old) l am waiting to start medication but this is on hold at the moment (due to a medical issue in the family). Psychiatry UK wants to put me on Meflynate XL 20mg once a day.

I am nervous about the side effects of this medication. I would like to talk to anyone who has tried this and their experience.

Hi Snowdrop,

I feel for you. I looked up on Google what is Meflynate XL 20 mg used for, and saw that Ritalin brand & generic contain methylphenidate hydrochloride. I never took that, but I took a generic for Concerta (brand name) Methylphenidate hydrochloride extended-release product at 30mg. I googled stimulant drugs to treat ADHD & got :

methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin, Metadate, Focalin)

amphetamine (Adderall, Adderall XR)

dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine, Desxtrostat)

lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse).

I took Concerta generic methylphenidate 30 mg for 6 months, and then Vyvanse 30mg generic for lisdaexamfetamine for 4 months. Both drugs raised my blood pressure, and I felt irritable & got head aches.

EVER INDIVIDUAL PERSON'S BODY ACTS DIFFERENT TO DIFFERENT DRUGS, I.E. - WHAT DOESN'T WORK FOR YOU MAY WORK FOR ME, AND VICE VERSA. IT'S UP TO YOU AND YOUR DOCTOR.

According to Somerset Prescribing Formulary or NHS ICB:

What is meflynate XL 20mg modified-release?

Only the modified-release formulation of methylphenidate should be used for the treatment of ADHD in adults. A maximum daily dose of 80 mg should not be exceeded. The recommended starting dose of Meflynate XL in patients who are not currently taking methylphenidate is 20 mg once daily.

Your Meflynate XL 20 mg may work great for you. Good Luck!

thank you for your insight and advice

I'm sorry about my confusing reply. Meflynate XL 20 mg is NOT the same as methylphenidate. My bad. Sorry.
