My daughter is 8 yrs old. She was diagnosed with adhd this year, but had been struggling with academics at school and behavior at home for several years. She has a chronic condition (JA) that we believe has caused her anxiety and depression , and the adhd probably made it worse. We were trying to avoid medication , but are very concerned about her wellbeing, so spoke to a psychiatrist that recommended we start with depression medication first , and when that is under control to move forward with the adhd medication. If anyone here has gone through something similar, I would appreciate any input, sharing your experience… thank you!

Adhd + depression. Which to medicate for first?
I would actually start a stimulant first for ADHD, only because it acts so rapidly that you can potentially improve her ADHD very quickly and at least get her some relief very soon. I also wonder if the improvements in energy and decreased apathy a stimulant might provide would boost her mood and overall outlook. I’m just guessing here. Depression medication (SSRIs) can take weeks to months to reach an effective dose. Untreated ADHD & the sense of failure and powerlessness accompanying it can definitely contribute to a depressed mood. I am not saying treating the ADHD will fix the depression but it may actually help it a little. Has she needed oral steroids for her juvenile arthritis (if I have that abbreviation right)? Steroids themselves can cause depression, so be sure her rheumatologist is aware of the depression if she’s needed them. They can help maximize her steroid-sparing medication and potentially push insurance company for coverage of biologic therapies if they’re warranted to avoid steroids.
We have a similar situation, no Chronic condition, but very high anxiety and depression in addition to ADHD. Our doctor recommended the same, treat the depression and anxiety first. Our child started a low dose of Zoloft. It took a month to take full affect, but has made a huge difference. I’m not sure a traditional stimulate will ever be recommended as they can often increase anxiety. We’re taking one day at a time. Best of luck to you, hang in there!
