Hello, my son is 10 years old and we started meds at the end of last year. He has been on adderall xr and concerta Xr I believe 18mg and then bumped up the dose to 27mg. We haven’t really seen much improvement in school. Especially in reading/writing. The teachers are always letting me know that he is looking around the room and not doing/refusing sometimes to do his work. He usually is a silly, sweet kid. While on meds, he always seems annoyed and easily irritated. He even starts to cry and seems overly emotional. Does anyone have any recommendations for meds to try. I don’t want to continue giving him something, that we mostly see more side effects then benefits. He is also starting to let me know that he doesn’t want to take it and doesn’t like how it makes him feel. I want my child to do good in school, but I don’t see an improvement to continue. I would appreciate any advice.

We have had to increase my son’s Adderall XR to 30mg daily over the last 6 years. Don’t be afraid to increase the dosage. It’s usually a long process and you should address the inattentivness in school with his doctor as soon as possible.

Also if your son is struggling in reading you might as his doctor about testing for dyslexia. Research shows a strong correlation between ADHD and dyslexia in boys. This might explain his difficulty with reading and writing. My son describes his type as “letters jumping around on the page.” We have since had him cover his left eye and listen to classical music in the left ear while reading. It has increase his speed, comprehension and recollection.
