Hi,

My son has been diagnosed with Adhd, and was put onto Concerta.

We saw a big change in him, however about a two Weeks before the School Holiday, we notice a set back. He was going on like before.

School began on Monday again, and all was great until Thursday.

He is not working in Class, Can not sit still, basically as he was before.

We never stopped given him the pills.

Is there anybody who could give me an answere why?

Ducktail- I am no doctor but I believe their body tolerates it and it becomes not effective any move. Or maybe he out grow the dose. I would not waste any time and get it adjusted. Any time medication is not right it means they are spending time unfocued and impulsive, this is hard for them to deal with and could lead to trouble for them. If it is the wrong medication they please consider consulting a child psychiatrist (its best if they are a specialist in ADHD) who can manage the best type of medication, not a family doctor.

Best of luck.

Depending on the dose I had to have my daughters up'd to 27mg within the first month of her being on Concerta. Remember its not a magic pill, therapy and counseling are great tools for coping with adhd on top of medication and special diet. My daughters 9 and still has her days, not every day is a good day and Im ok with that because we all have bad days here and there.

The same thing happened to my son while taking Concerta. We changed the dosage to a higher one and he did well for a couple months and then that dosage stopped working. He’s now taking Vivance which is in a different class of drugs and it’s working great. Unfortunately you may have to try a few different drugs or dosages before you find what’s right for your child. They can build up a tolerance to it and you have no choice but to change meds. My son also gets counseling and that is what his counselor said. Hope you get your child back on track, I know it can be frustrating before you find the right fit!

It could be a dosage issue. I have experienced several times my son’s dosage needed adjustment

Hello,

My Son is six years old and he has ADHD. The first six years have been impossible with preschool and school. He was in trouble always for impulsive behavior and noncompliance, and of course hyper activity. We did not choose to put him on medication because there was so much about him that is intelligent, clever and sensitive - almost genius in the way he operates. I didn’t want anything to interfere with those qualities. I just HAD to believe that all of this was bigger than the way they tell us to ‘deal with it’. This year he has had four weeks of extraordinary behavior at school. Four weeks! I believe a lot of this has to do with his diet being all Whole Foods and no artificial ingredients, no sugary foods and low carbs. It also has to do with the fact that before school we go for a run in the neighborhood every single day so that he can exert his energy and be in a better position to focus. He has an aid that is so proud of him and the changes he is making (he gets several breaks during the school day- which helps with focus) I also speak to him all the time about how to communicate when he’s upset and how to calm down when he’s angry and I just simply believe in him. I also found this podcast which was so amazing and supportive because I really feel like our children are so special they have just a lot faster brains than we do about everything LOL - Which is why they always need to be stimulated and bore easily.

Check it out... it’s only 25minutes because the host has ADHD and he admits that he cannot possibly concentrate for an hour long podcast. Go figure! I found it intelligent and sensitive and very educational about our magical little people.

Podcast is called: fasterthannormal.com

So usually start you on a low dose and sometimes it has to be adjusted upwards. I have also found medications to seem wonderful at first and then after a month or 6 weeks they tank.

Discuss this with your child's doctor and see what he thinks
