Antibiotics and wafrin

Hi lm taking warfrin and would like some insight and others experience into the use of antibiotics for infections.

I'm guessing you are already aware that it's important to make sure that whoever prescribes your antibiotics is quite clear that you are taking warfarin, and I always think it's best not to assume that a prescriber is fully aware of your taking an anticoagulant, given how much pressure our health professionals are under these days, because it's not impossible that this vital bit of information might get missed. It costs nothing to mention it yourself and could be a lifesaver!

The critical line in the NHS advisory, under 'Cautions', says : 'Many medicines and supplements can interfere with warfarin. This can make you more likely to have bleeding', and then names 'antibiotics such as erythromycin, co-trimoxazole or norfloxacin'. Clearly then, that means it's not a comprehensive list. So please be sure to stay safe by speaking up.

Hi i had clarythmocyin whilst on warfarin did not affect me, they just asked me to my INR when finishing the course just to check, But that was me, you should speak with your docs in the first instance if you are concerned

Hi ✋ Im waiting to speak with GP again rather daunting experience for me. lm allergic to penicillin and think now with Thrombocythemia and Jak2 l may need to be extra vigilant so thanks again lve had this awful ear infection such a long time.

Hi yes I am allergic to penicillin which is why I have the clarithmocyin as it does not contain it. I have aps, factor 5 and dvt last year so yes be careful but least don’t worry.

Hi. I’m allergic to most antibiotics unfortunately. But I do have to take them sometimes. Clindamycin doesn’t seem to affect my INR but a recent attempt at taking doxycycline made my INR go up. I think that INR can go up or down and that with certain antibiotics you have to be careful. My dentist cannot prescribe any antibiotics for me, I’m allergic to penicillin and erythromycin and the third one which I think is ciprofloxacin does cause problems with INR. It’s easier for me because I home test so I just test more often while I’m on them.
