I've just been told I need to consider taking warfarin for the rest of my life. Would I need to tell my employer if I start taking it???

Hi do you have Occupational health people at work ? If you do I’d tell them just so they and any first aid people know . I take Rivoroxaban and have to carry a card on me .

I work in a school so they are only involved when we have too much time off work. Thanks for your reply.

I’d still tell someone do you have a nurse there ? Even first aiders should know to be honest . I had to tell my occ health because where I work ,if I cut myself they need to know I case I don’t stop bleeding ! But I work with medicine so I guess it’s different .

Thank you so much for your help. I think I will need a conversation with them in the near future.

I wasn't expecting to be told I needed to consider going onto warfarin for life and think I was a bit stunned when he said. I was expecting him to say aspirin. So I didnt really ask many questions. Especially as it was a consultation over the phone. I have some thinking time now.

I had a blood clot in my lungs from nowhere. But found out I have lupus anticoagulant, which means my blood is too thick . I’m on blood thinners for life because it can lead to strokes, heart attacks etc if I don’t take them. I was fit and healthy otherwise and only 47 when it happened .

Hi i am interested in your reoly as the hospital havebooked me in next wedk for further blood tests as they have also picked up lupus indicators on my blood. At the times of my DVT's this was mentioned but in the intervening years (30+) things have changed. I've not had any advise yet but what do i need to look out for. Considering i've had nothing or seen no-one for years things seem to be moving rapidly now.

Probably advisable; they would need to know if you had diabetes or a similar condition, and this is the same principle.

You will need to have your inr checked as and when required so you may need time off work to get your inr check. It may only be 1 or 2 hours depending on who is doing the test. You can also buy your own machine at a cost of 300 pounds but first make sure you can get the strips on priscription from your health board it would also be a good idea to tell them why your are taking warfarin ie have you had a metal arv op. The reason you are taking is more important than the fact you are taking it

I would. If you had any sort of accident they would need to treat you more swiftly /advise emergency service. If they don't know, they can't help you correctly.

Hi Dartsnerd , you should tell them for your own safety. With all of the blood thinners you bruise very easily. If you have any accident at work cut yourself for example it will take time to stop. If you fall down hurt your head, even just s knock you have to go to hospital to check it out as all blood thinners when you fall can cause bleed on the brain.

Your boss might sent you to a occupational health or do risk assessment for you. Your INR level has to be checked on a regular basis ( at the beginning on the weekly basis) later when your body gets use to it less often.

Lots of medication , food , drink affect warfarin so you need be careful with that.

I know lots to take in and I don't want to scare you. I tell you one thing my friend when I couldn't breathe because of the blood clot on my lung it was horrible. This happened to me twice within a year and I didn't think twice about warfarin. This was 3 year's ago. I could have died twice but I didn't so if you can save your life don't hesitate. You can do it ! 😃👍

It would be very good to wear a medical ID bracelet. If you were in an accident situation, medics would know how to treat you.

True. Worrying how this might affect my job as work with difficult children that we have to restrain occassionally. But a bracelet might be a good idea.
