3 stone and i've kept it off.
I have lost 22lbs so far - I still have a way to go. What I love is that this is 'healthy eating' and makes you think about what you are eating and going. The extra energy is a definite bonus. The tips given are good and clear. Yes I've had hiccups along the way but I am in a far better position than I was in June!
It has been slow to lose 17lb but it has not been hard, I know because eating and exercise have changed it will continue to go down then stay off. Wrote this following a bowl of home made veggie soup with a dollop of fat free yoghurt in it.
Since last January I have lost 2.5 stone and reduced my BMI to 18.5. However I can't thank the NHS weight loss plan for that. It was a mixture of the 5.2 / 2day fasting diet and a low carb/high fat diet [LCHF]. For over 30 years I've been a weight watcher and returned early Jan yet again this year until it suddenly dawned that they were most interested in selling their own products rather than weight loss. So - diagnosed with hypertension I decided to sort myself out. Looked on the NHS site and didn't believe in the NHS food plate: there is FAR TOO MUCH CARBOHYDRATE on it; I don't have diabetes but having had a health check was aware of the dangers and though not obese was overweight at the time. All those carbs were only going to add to the dangers. So - Low carbs for me and I threw out the Flora and Benecol margarine too and resorted to BUTTER. Since when I have gone from a size 16 to an 8/10 and never felt better. Didn't do much for the hypertension sadly but I feel great. I did take up walking but already had an active lifestyle and was very fit.
Brilliant!! WELL DONE. I am just starting the 5.2 diet as it sounds a good way of losing the weight AND keeping it off. But how does the LCHF diet work - have never heard of that one
Try googling LCHF. I don't know how it works but it does. I'm 71 now and haven't been this slim since I was about 18!!! Have you read Michael Moseley's book 'The Fast Diet' as the science is fascinating. It's much the same as the 5.2 diet. It's the NHS food plate that I really don't approve of. I know there's no simple answer but if that is what the NHS preaches then why are there so many fatties on the streets.
I have done a version of Low carb high fat diet. It worked well for me. This is one site but there are others. It works because not all calories are the same: carbs make you put on weight.
There appear to be loads of ways in which to lose weight. Some will be easier for some than others. The basic mantra - eat less, move more - is behind it all - however we translate it - where 'eat less' means 'take in fewer calories than we use up each day or each week'. For some people, the the slower carb route works as people feel full (there's psychology in all this too). For others, the high protein route works - swift access, slow release but can be expensive. High fat seems to have little to commend it unless there is also high activity - maybe it should be called 'higher-fat-than-you-expected-to-eat-when-on-a-reducing diet'.
Generally, I try to eat food that is not too messed about with so Benecol and so on would not be for me whereas a little butter would always have been.
But you seem to have been doing much right over the years and now are doing even more that works well for your health.
I am very inspired because i am currently a size 16 and i would love to be a
size 10 but i am struggling to lose weight even though i am eating well and within my calorie intake and also going to the gym 4 times a week. any advice? thank you
well done: but I would have thought that changing from butter to flora would go someway to reversing your hypertension. as I'm not a doc, its only a guess.
32lbs since january 2013 would like to loss another 1lb by Christmas. My goal for next year is to lose another 7lbs. What a difference a year makes. This time last year I was depressed and over weight. This year i'm slim, fit and healthy. It is an amazing feeling.
I have yet to start, I am 52 yrs (young), cholesterol of 3.8, thyroid problem and irregular heartbeat. I need to lose about 12lbs, but exercising has been a bit slow going.

me too! half way there, but it gets more difficult the closer you get to your goal.

18lbs ! Since August of this year, so slow - 1 lb a week, one week 3 lb !! It is a huge improvement for me as I have never managed to last more than about two weeks on 'diets' before and quickly put back on any weight I may have lost and I have tried them all !! I think the change has been giving up on diets and just going through the 12 week plan and making small adjustments week by week and slowly changing how I relate to food, not great on exercising yet especially since the dark nights came in, but overall I feel so much better - and a dress size down ! Still 4 stone to go ... but confident!
I've been following your comments throughout the forum. They seem a little negative.
I've lost 25kg since January 2013, down from 88.9 to 63.9 (about 4 stone lost). I didn't really follow the NHS 12 week plan, but I've got loads of great advice from this forum and from the NHS website. I've lost weight by calorie counting (using MyFitnessPal) and getting more active. I've taken up running and also currently going to the gym 2 times per week for a swim and strength training. Although I would have to say it is the losing weight which has enabled me to become more active rather than being more active has made me lose weight!
So far I have managed to put on 8lbs!!! I am confused as to how this happened as I have been sticking to the diet and exercise 100%.
still cannot work out the calorie counting, have tried to download appliances to my phone but they all seem to need to be acompanied to a facebook account or similar, which I don't have or want. I'm 30 kilos overweight, but blood sugar and blood pressure are perfect. Lots of fresh veg, no puddings no red meat, no soft drinks, as a norm, I can't figure out how to begin this diet
I was the same, Bartrebe. I've never drunk soft drinks and became obese on large plates of carbs. I was raised by an NHS GP nurse who stuck rigidly to the old food pyramid at mealtimes so my diet has never really been that unhealthy. Well, except for the horrendous snacking habit I developed the last few years, but I was obese before I left home 18 years ago.
If you are finding calories too difficult, don't worry about that bit. Follow the exercise advice, make your portions smaller and then experiment with what does work. For some of us it's losing sugar and carbs from our diet. Others are using versions of the 5:2 or fast diet. It took me a few weeks to fine tune my diet. I knew I had to get rid of sugar (diabetes is rife in my family) and I tried eating thyroid-friendly foods (that didn't last!) but had no idea I was going to lose carbs. It was just what worked and I feel so much healthier. Diet plans try to be 'one size fits all' but they can never be. Take what you can from the NHS plan and then look around for what else you can do.
So obviously I'm one more who didn't lose my 2 stone on the NHS plan. I'm sure it does work for those who like calorie counting and are able to exercise, but that rules plenty of us out. And eating a little of something is plain torturous. It's so much easier to just rule things out. At least, it is for me, but that maybe because I'd give up anything not to spend the rest of my life weighing food and counting calories!
I lost 2 stone between 6th October and 21st November (46 days.) Next weigh in in January.
HI, I loved the plan and the exercise podcasts! I lost over 9 kg following it and now still going on (lost 2 more so far), because I've finally found an eating regime that is sustainable in the long-term. The only improvement I'd suggest is developing your own calorie counter: I use My Fitness Pal and love it, but the two "plans" sometimes give you contradictory tips and that's confusing. Thanks!
Worked it out and I have lost 52lbs since 1st Jan, I eat insignificant calories during the day and still exercise, and a main meal in the evening Monday to Friday, I am a little more relaxed at the weekends, and often have a second meal, it works for me but won't be everyone's cup of tea!

well i cut down on portion sizes doing some exercise drinking plenty of water and in 2 days ive lost 3lb im so pleased
I once weight in at 282. and im 5'1' and short I had cancer 8 years ago. very over weight at 282 very much in trouble. its been 2years and weight 139 now. but I have trouble with the lose skin and back hurts and very clumsy at time ...any advice..

31 days of calorie counting and 1 stone 2lbs lighter. I just can't believe how easy its been. I have tried every diet over the years and nothing has been as quick or easy! So pleased! I'm on a roll!
I have lost 5.2 Kg in the twelve weeks, so I am a happy bunny. I've tried to keep to 1400 calories, but some days have been under and other days have been over. What I am really proud of is that I am no longer obese - just overweight. It makes a lot of difference in the way I think about myself. But I'm not giving up yet. My new target is to get half way through the overweight category, so I'm aiming at 70 Kg now. It is many years since I was that weight, I'm not sure that I can do it. I must be bold and say, yes I can!
I need to lose 4Stone I have only just started the plan in fact will start on Monday 28-4-2014 I am starting to blow for tugs which is my reason to start. Any advice.

Been on 3weeks now and nothing ...but am blaming my meds for this ..lol I am so stuck in my ways finding it very hard I am going on 67 got bad hips and onset of engina ..well they say a bit of furring so cant do much exercise can do about 10s at a time but hay ho I will keep plodding on and hope for the best and it it a great site x
Lost over 2 stone and still going but wanting to slow it down a bit now - without starting to put it on again. Used a low GI diet with a target of 1700 cals per day, max, complemented by lots of exercise, mainly walking (3.5 MPH) but gym and swimming too. Probably fitter than I've been for years and (hopefully) wont have to take metformin!!! Fingers crossed.
I'm now up to 4st 5lbs.
28lbs in total so far, 10lbs pre-nhs plan and 18lb during nhs-plan. I'm delighted with the loss, and how my body now looks and feels. I want to lose a little more, but I no longer think or refer to what I'm doing as a diet: it's a lifestyle change.
I have lost 3 stone now and still going, I have 14 more pounds to go. I have found using the MyFitnessPal app very helpful in tracking calories in conjunction with the NHS weight loss plan.

I need support, which currently I do not have.
Over 2 and a half stone in just about 4 months. Trying to maintain my present weight now as I'm happy where I am. Just stick to it and keep up the exercise and it definitely works. And I have a drink (a glass of wine and a beer) most nights - I do one or two days a week alcohol free. Portion control and a low GI diet worked for me.

I have lost 27.3lbs since starting i am still trying to lose more but finding it hard at the moment but hopefully i will not give up the hard thing for me is not being able to go to the gym as i am disabled and i can't walk far !!!

I am not one on the programme, as my weoght loss journey is not over. This is the best healthy eating plan ( I hate the word diet) I have been on, it is sustainable and taught me a lot. I have gained information from other sources too, but this plan help lay the foundations I needed, so I can not only choose what's best for me but also ignore the people who don't know what is best for me. Great plan , never felt more confident

Very helpful, kept a daily log of what I was eating and the exercises I did - cannot believe how far a person can come in 12 weeks. 2 stones lighter, I have decided to carry on to lose another stone
I find that the blanket 1400 calories is too restrictive for someone who is 5ft8.5 and is highly active like me. I have however lost 10 pounds in 4 weeks since becoming vegan eating approximately 2000 calories a day
I've had three weeks where I've stayed the same weight in total I've lost 12lb in 11 weeks I'm keeping going as I want to lose another 25/28lb by the time I'm 40 (June 2015)
2 stone so far. I decided to try and just keep it off for 3 months and now I'm back to my diet!
Just ending week 8 !!! And I've lost 12 .1/2lbs.....so so happy @ feel better, eating well and doing the recommended 150 mins exercise seems to be paying off, I'm still enjoying my weekends but in moderation.....happy days.

This is my first week and I have lost 3 pounds it might not be a lot but as they say every little helps , In all I need to lose 4 stone but I am taking it 1 stone at a time smaller goals Last week I was 14 stone but today 13 stone 11 pounds , I have been tod to take it slower as when you have lost the weight its a life style not a diet , I hope that's right .

Is this an old thread ? However I feel the need to reply. I don't agree with the no carbers. I have lost 37 lbs in 17 weeks, on a diet with carbs. The principles of calories in v calories burned works for me...faddy diets may work for some but not easy to sustain for the rest of your life..
Just started week 3. I haven't dieted for years....just accepted that I was never going to be thinner. But I bought bathroom scales and was horrified to weigh in at 13stone 9 lbs (and only 5foot!) So took the bull by the horns and found your site for support. ) Love the instant calories counter) Lost 3.5lbs first week and 2 lbs last week. I feel as though I'm well on the way!

with 1400cal I hardly shift a pound...
16 kg and it was not very difficult. I realised that if I cut drastically on sweets, bread, pasta and potatoes I could eat more meat , salads , vegetables, fruits and subsequently fill my stomach up. On the other hand I aimed for 30 min /day, 4-5 days/week - swimming, running, walking or cycling. It was probably the easiest and the most efficient diet that I have ever had. As an advice- ( it worked for me) always keep fruits in your bag and eat them whenever you are hungry and make sure you always eat your three meals at the right time and have fruits/yoghurts as a snack. I feel great.
20 kg so far in 4 months. It was not as difficult as I thought it would be and I find counting calories quite straight forward. I'm 11 kg away from a healthy BMI, but I have reached a plateau (the first since I started). I just took up running and I will also start yoga after the new year to help boost the weight loss.
After christmas I have lost 2lb. The good news is that I have not put weight on. I have come to terms with the fact that whatever the eating plan I adopt will have to be one I am happy to stick to for the rest of my life.
Counting calories every day is not appealing at all and unsustainable. thinking about food every day is also unpalatable.
So in conclusion I will give the 5:2 diet my best shot.
So here goes.....

I have lost 11.75 lbs in 3 weeks and am finding it easier to lose weight on the low calorie diet than I did with Weight Watchers. More support and advice available online

After 12 weeks I've lost 5.2 kgs. I am happy with it because I could follow the programme even though I had to deal with some complicated weeks. I'm definitively not leaving the site, it helps me stay focused and I love the support we give one another. And I still need to lose 5.1 kgs.

I liked receiving the NHS weight loss guide weekly emails, it's a shame they stop sending them after 12 weeks. For me 12 weeks is not long enough. It would be beneficial if there was an option to choose a time period with 12 weeks being the minimum.
10 pounds but not an option. I didn't follow the NHS plan but did did increase my calories after reading it. First week 800 calories a day. Read the NHS plan and increased to 1200 per day but with an hours daily exercise.I had an increase in thyroxine which also helped. Weight plateaued after 8 weeks so stopped losing any. Used My Fitness Pal and a fitness DVD on the days when I didn't get other forms of exercise.
Over 12 weeks I have lost 1st 2lb with the NHS weight loss programme, getting & giving support on the health unlocked site. I stil some weight to lose but really pleased with my progress so far. Healthy eating not a diet.
I lost 2 stone with the nhs 12 week plan 2 years ago but the weight has gradually crept back on so I am the same weight now as I was then.
1st 8lb within the 12 weeks of the plan! Still a way for me so I plan to continue with this sustainable lifestyle change until I reach my goals 🌸
Why the discouraging zero label rather than between zero and 5 kg?
For those just starting this makes there initial weight loss seem insignificant.
This forum has given me so much support and encouragement, don't think I would have been able to achieve my weight loss without the people who use the forum.

17lbs in 8 weeks and 10 inches overall - I'm happy with that and am aiming to lose a further 20lbs in the coming months. Aside from the weight loss I feel so much healthier and am really enjoying my meals.
I've lost about 8KG so far - on week 6. Much more active - going to the gym and Running!!!!! easily got up to 4K so I'll be aiming for 5K plus in a day or so. Much easier than I expected! Great support from the community.

I am at the end of the 12 weeks. I started at 18 stone 3lbs and I am now 17 stone 1lb. I have lost 17lbs and onwards!
I'm on week 8, and despite not losing anything last week ( I am weight training so it may, MAY, be muscle) the losses I have made, the renewed ( previously I just ate to stop myself going hungry)interest in food, and a feeling of wellbeing has made it all worthwhile. and as I said, despite one or two setbacks, once I get to week 12 I will just continue with my new, healthier lifestyle; and my knees can't thank me enough. bingo!

I have just started I need. Motivation my Bmi is 39.5 and I weigh so much more than I should.
I am so disappointed but will keep going I'm just starting my 3rd week.
I have been using the NHS healthy eating site since last April and have lost about two stone, but I have become stuck on 11 stone 4lb and just cannot seem to lose more, can anyone give me advice on how to kick start my weight loss again?
I started following the advice in April. I would suggest that it is a change your life, not a diet. I certainly don't plan on coming off the new way of eating and thinking about food.
I like the way I feel about my new self. I hope that I can find the strength of mind to maintain the weight loss we have achieved and accept I am am probably a food addict.

I'm interested in the huge 0kg non weight loss.
I've lost 2 stone about 5 times between the ages of 30 and 45. But as I got older, the weight was harder and harder to lose and time it took longer each time to lose it too. On the 6th time I tried I lost just 7lbs in 12 weeks. Now that i'm almost 4 stone overweight and 50, it's going to be a around year I reckon to shift this o'l tyre, but I'm determined, and will keep it off this time as it's affecting my health now.
