My son's snorting started when he was 5 at first it was just that over the last year it's got more and more grunting throat clearing head jerking and just lately screaming my g.p has sent 3 referrals all of which will not see my son due to they don't deal with this type of medical condition all I'm looking for is a Dr who will probly diagnose my son's Tourettes the first doctor we seen said he had motor tics and then discharged him but trying to get someone to see him I feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall and no one seems to wanna help to be fair I don't think there is much understanding out their as doctors to diagnose this so we are back to square one which is back to g.p any help or suggestions would be great
Need help 9 year old son.: My son's... - Tourettes Action
Need help 9 year old son.
My Daughter stated having ticks from about 18 months old. She was first diagnosed with ADHD aged 12 years old. Diagnosed with Tourettes aged 14 years old, she is now 20 and has never had any help for tourettes. She does take medication for ADHD, which helps, however when she is anxious she has motor and vocal ticks.
Does your son have ADHD?
I'm sorry to hear that.It took over a year almost 2 for my daughter to get diagnosed. Our GP said otvwas just tics and it would go away but I knew it was Tourettes.I kept on until he referred me to our local hospital and we then got referred to Great Ormand St hospital.
Keep pushing your GP for a referral or If you can afford it go private.
Good luck x
I'm going to keep pushing it's just hard sometimes if feels Like I'm not getting anywhere and when their is a glimpse of hope he just fails again he did see a doctor who said he had motor tics but I know it's more like Tourettes as his teacher at school has it so he knows himself the symptoms and he's done a assessment for me to give the doctor when I get to see one it's nice to be able to talk to people who have or are going through the same things gives you that bit of hope so thank you xx
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that you're having a difficult time with getting your son the appropriate help. Tourettes Action has a list of consultants who specialise in diagnosing and treating Tourette Syndrome, you can contact the helpdesk and they will email or send you a paper copy of the list so that you can take it to your GP and discuss getting a referral to your local consultant.
If you do not live within a referral distance to any consultants on the list, you can ask your GP to be referred to your local community paediatrician. Either they will be able to clarify your son's symptoms, or they'll make a referral to a more specialist practitioner.
For TS to be diagnosed a person must have a combination of vocal and motor tics for at least 12 months. Tourettes Action also has information about the different types of tics and co-occurring conditions that people with TS often experience. If your son, fits the 12 month criteria and you can explain to the doctor that he has symptoms that are discussed in our literature it will hopefully help you in getting his referral. Parents often video their children ticking as additional evidence to give to the GP.
