I'd like to see this Phantom Noise business put to bed. I suspect tinnitus is the sound of blood flow in capillaries which the brain used to ignore but no longer. And why not, when our hearing is the result of the action of tiny bones in the ear. So tiny blood flows being heard is no outrageous suggestion.
I'd be interested in any opinion that tinnitus (not resulting from identified ear damage) has a cause other than what I've put.
It is a fascinating interview/feature - and it was kind of Lola to give us a mention on her 6 Music interview with Lauren Laverne this week - which brings up one of those tinnitus issues which I'm passingly familiar with, spontaneous otoacoustic emission:
