My doctor prescribed nortriptyline stating that it does help some patients eliminate or reduce tinnitus significantly. I am fearful to take the medication, because one of the side effects is ringing in the ears. Has anyone used this medication with success? Did anyone have their tinnitus caused by it?

Nortriptyline and Tinnitus
Hi there. It’s important to weigh up the pros and cons. If u already have tinnitus then it might be worth giving it a go. I started on an antidepressant a few months ago as I wasn’t coping with the tinnitus at all. Every person is different and get different effects.
Sometimes I think doctors will tell you anything , whether they actually believe it or not.Medication May play a part in helping,as for reducing T well I guess me and many others need convincing, try what you can as there maybe something there which does help you so it’s worth the effort, however if you firmly believe it will then nothing happens that’s like kicking someone while their down,, stick with it and best wishes in your quest.
I'm taking 25 mg of it a night. Prescribed after I got a diagnosis of "Functional Neurological Disorder" which includes tinnitus, hyperacusus, light-headeness, and all kinds of ticks and tremors in my body. Doesn't really seem to have any effect on me, good, bad, or indifferent.
Hi I take nortriptyline but not for tinnitus I was prescribed nortriptyline for facial myalgia . It helps for the pain .I also have tinnitus but has made no difference to the noise I wish you all the best with your condition if it's new to you just give it time. Time helps.
I think it might vary person by person. I've been taking Nortriptyline for about a year now (for depression/anxiety, not tinnitus) and I found there was no impact on my tinnitus. That said, recently I had my Nortriptyline dosage increased and I have had much worse tinnitus symptoms over the past week but I can't say for sure there's a direct correlation there.
I'd say give it a go and see if it works for you.
I've been taking it for 8 years since I had an acoustic neuroma operation. I take a very low dosage. It seems to have a mild affect on mood. In higher concentrations it makes me crazy. I have very bad tinnitus and it has no affect at all on the tinnitus or on my constant dizziness. It's essentially an anti-depressant for me.
