Hi, My name is Alan aged 68, over the last few months I have had problems with a high pitched ringing noise in my left ear, which is now constant and very loud. I have a appointment at my local ENT clinic in 4 weeks, which I think will be delayed due to the coronavirus. I am really struggling with the noise, as anyone any idea`s how to cope better with this problem.
Thanks

Oh sorry to hear that you have this high pitched ringing in your ear, I know it's horrible, have you got any Maskers white noise, or has your doctor given you an antibiotic, as you may have an infection, but ENT will be the best to help you, try masking it with sounds from the sea, wind, rain, stream, ocean, and white noise on your phone, especially at night, it will give you something else to focus on, I have Tinnitus too, but have hearing aids now, they've help me, I use these to help calm my self as I know it's distressing, good luck at your ENT appointment, they should be able to help you,
Hi Anne, Yes I have tried white noise, ok but can only listen to it for short periods, the thing I find best is to keep busy, but at the moment with the virus it is difficult. Can`t wait to start seeing the grandchildren again which will keep me busy hopefully.
Check with the BTA to see if there is a Tinnitus Support Group near you.
The membership of such a group does not provide anything 'clinical' however mutual support does help, and information from others who have, or have had, similar problems can prove to be worthwhile.
Unfortunately Support Groups are not able to meet at the moment, but the BTA have set up a Virtual Support Group, Details below, you may find it helpful. Good Luck.
LOG ON TO THE BTA
VIRTUAL SUPPORT GROUP
One of our members participated in this initiative from The BTA and it seems it was very well received. Eleven people took part around the country
Here is her reaction to the event.
“Regarding the virtual meeting – it took 1.5 hours and following individual introductions, when people gave an overview of their experience of tinnitus, Colette (BTA Acting Head of Services) gave an update and outlined tinnitus support options, such as the information on the BTA website. After that BTA President talked about his experience of tinnitus whilst working as an audiologist, addressing some points raised by individuals about ‘treatments’, for example the potential of Cognetive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helping with the management of tinnitus.
‘There was then a group discussion in which individuals were invited to ask questions. I don’t think anything particularly new came up to the kind of things we’ve discussed in our group meetings.
‘It was an interesting experience and at the end, several participants talked of how helpful they had found the meeting.
