Hi there - I have just learned that I have otospongiosis in my left ear. I am just about to turn 50. I’d love to hear from others who have lived with this about the course of the condition and anything that has helped. I am planning to get a hearing aid on the nhs and see how that works for me before considering surgery.
Does anyone know about the links between otospongiosis/otosclerosis and menopause? I have read there is some research to show that otosclerosis can be brought on by the hormones of menopause, and that would seem a possibility for me as I don’t think we have it in the family. Given that my right ear is still ok, I’d like to know if it is thought to be helpful or harmful to take HRT if you have this condition?
Also, do people with otospongiosis/sclerosis feel like their head is blocked with congestion all the time? This is how I experience it, and in fact I have recently experienced much more congestion/mucus creation in my head than ever before - is this a coincidence or is there any causal relationship?
Insights, tips and shared experiences very welcome.
Thank you!
