Hello R, I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with your T at the moment. The BTA has a very good helpline so maybe you could ring them for a coat and some support if you wish to.
I have noticed one or two people on here over the last few weeks being troubled with spikes in their tinnitus. I haven't posted but my T has been going through an horrendous spike for the last 2/3 weeks. I have no doubt we will all find our t settles a little before long until then look after yourself and take care. You are not on your own and things will get better for you, you will find plenty of support on here along with sensible advice.
Thank you for your reply sorry you are going through a spike also.
Im really struggling as its done it daily since last tuesday 14th august and much worse through night and so much louder but right ear worse than left.
Im knackered and been having really bad ear pain from last night too.
Get down to the doctors and get as much help as possible - I am going to be demanding that I get retraining Therapy and masking devices because we have to be strong and not let this ruin our lives. X
Hello and welcome to the British Tinnitus Association forum. Do feel free to ask any questions, I hope that you find this a helpful and supportive place to help you manage your tinnitus.
Warmest wishes
Nic (BTA Communications Manager and Forum Administrator)
Hi, you aren't alone as I am in the same situation. 7 years with T which was manageable and a sudden spike which is battling me. Mine also was just before I went on holiday and it's been a good few weeks now. I have been to see my doctor and he has referred me to an audiologist, I get sports massages to relieve tension and also will be getting cognitive behavioural therapy. In the meanwhile I am listening to violet noise very quietly in my headphones as well as taking anti anxiety meds. It's hard, and all of the advice you read is for people new to tinnitus but I just keep repeating to myself "you habituated before, you'll habituate again." And carry on your life as you would have done before because there is nothing worse than letting it take over your life.
Thank you for your reply sorry you are going through a spike also.

Hi, I've the same problem, had sinus issues due to hayfever in the warm weather at the end of June, eustation tubes were blocking all the time I went on holidays but when I got back last week t has spiked badly and hasn't come down,I get loud tonal noise in right ear and constant loud hissing on left ear. I can't understand it either and can't mask it.before I went on holidays I could sleep no bother without masking, now I'm panicking will this be my new noise. It's so scary but alot of us seem to be having the same problem.
Thank you for your reply sorry you are going through a spike also.Im panicking this is my new noise also.

hi Siobhan, im so sorry to hear your suffering badly mines just spiked today and its the loudest for long time both ears for no reason. in afraid that the b.t. helpline doesn't have any medically qualified people you can chat to I have suggested to them in the past that they should have as everyone wants some kind of answer as to why theyre lifes are beibng ruined with this afflicition, you can chat to them and they'll say this and that but at the end of the day your on your own like all of us doctors are useless too in my experience and an appointment with audiologist takes at least 6 months here in scotland anyway so try to stap positive and be strong that's what everyone tells me so you just struggle through from one day to the next hoping it will quieten down take care crawford
Thank you for your reply sorry you are going through a spike they are awful and my tinnitus as never changed so quick before
Im really struggling as its done it daily since last tuesday 14th august and much worse through night and so much louder but right ear worse than left buf both incredibly loud
Im knackered and been having really bad ear pain from last night too.
hi Siobhan, thanks yes this spike is really bad worst ive had for ages but funny you should mention the ear pain, im told theres no pain from T but recently ive been getting quite a bit mostly in my really bad ear the right one but also in my left I do wonder if theyre connected. at the moment its louder than the planes flying over my house to Edinburgh airport, they come quite low here as im on the flight path and airport about 5 miles away, I have an app. with audiologist next Friday so im gonna mention this pain stay strong take care craw.
It's interesting that so many people seem to be suffering bad spikes with their T at the moment. Like others on here I'm getting worried this is going to be a new permanent and it was debilitating before!
I have mentioned before that sometimes I wonder if it has anything to do with changes in air pressure or something of that type but I suppose people will just think I'm nuts😂 Some follow up on how and when spikes occur in people might be helpfull though.
I too get pain in my ears occasionally especially if there is a sudden loud noise like someone dropping something.
I have to say when I found out the BTA has been on the go for 40 yrs and the only thing we have to go on still is habituation, in other words, get on with it, I wonder how much 'proper' research is actually happening 😏.
The thing that I ha e found most helpfull is being able to chat to others in the same situation and knowing I'm not alone.
Hi,it does seem like there's alot getting spikes at the moment, maybe like curlew is saying it's to do with air pressure changes it just seems so strange that so many of us are getting spikes.please to God some day they might be a cure.i am getting pain also occasionally.just hopefully this settles for everyone, nobody really knows what this is like unless you have it,it's great having people on here that we can all chat to and understand.
Thank you for all your replies i dont know if this will work replying to all.
I really cant cope with this tinnitus at this level it really is worst iv ever had it!!!im so anxious as since it flared last week its so so loud and asnt calmed down in right ear but the volume its at in both ears dont get why its changed so quick from last week n gone so high.
Its defining my life!!!!
I dont know how im going to cope with it at this level as i do think its my new tinnitus and never had all these spikes and changes so quick.
It changed in 2016 then june this year then from last week its really unbearable now!!!!
As anyone heard of liam boehm on youtube whos claimed to have cured his own tinnitus through dry fasting and cold showers?my partner thinks its a scam.ill watch some more videos but his other book is £50 but i wont get it as could be a scam x
I recently came to tinnitus and am working with Julian Cowan Hill to help me. His point and Liam's point is that tinnitus is a result of the central nervous system going into red alert and so, steps are needed to calm the nervous system down so the tinnitus calms down and in some cases, goes. Different practices suit different people and part of the work is to find what works for you. ( Julian also recommends body based practices such as Tai-Chi, Yoga and swimming so you settle more into your body and out from your mind). Also, the more stressed you become, the worse your T will become and around and around you go. I've read the book living with tinnitus and hyperacusis and it is basically common sense and also CBT. I also think you need to be a zen monk to apply it when you are stressed. Also, what you eat has an influence on your T. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, sugar and salt (both packed into processed foods) and get tested to see if you have any food intolerances and drink at least 2 litres of water a day. I also found relaxation/hypnosis CDs have helped me calm down and there is one for tinnitus on David Knight's website.
Hello there. Sorry, I should clarify. I was struck with high-pitched tinnitus about two months ago and found Julian Cowan Hill on YouTube, watched all his videos, read his book and then he has become my therapist. I can tell you he is a genuine and wonderful man. His website is: juliancowanhill.co.uk. Liam I have not tried but there is no 'quick' fix or miracle cure - there is method in what they both are saying. The central nervous system has gone into red alert and the body and mind need to be soothed right down and you basically need to change they way you are living. So...when you are stressed about your tinnitus, your body does into red alert ot fight or flight which produces stress hormones such as adrenaline /cortisol which then fuels your tinnitus to spike and around and around we go. So, body based practices such as tai-chi or yoga or swimming take you out of your mind focus as does meditation.
If you cannot meditate then getting a hypnosis cd can help you. David Knight is a hypnotherapist and his website sells CDs/MP3s and one of them is for tinnitus. So, what you will need to do (and I know how difficult it is, is to start to introduce new practices into your life which soothe the central nervous system and focus on the body). Julian and also a man called Simon Baker offer craniosacral therapy. Again, neither is saying these are miracle cures. I have tried craniosacral therapy with Simon and my tinnitus goes right down after an hour session. It is all about learning to take care of yourself and definitely getting outside help to help you learn to take care of yourself.
I have good days, bad days and dreadful days but Julian has definitely helped me.
Ill look on julians website but if you dont mind me asking how as he become your therapist?and same with simon barker?are the sessions online or in person?sorry im confused
My tinnitus has been horrendous for 2weeks since flared up and just seems to be getting louder and louder and cant cope and do feel this is my new tinnitus and is scary.
I cant relax when its so loud.I thought i had it bad for years and when it changed in 2016 didnt think it change again and just got worse and worse in last 2weeks and really is loudest iv ever had it.
Wow I scrolled this thread for a while thinking how much negativity can there be & you just stopped the trend...
Julian hill is a perfect start for people & yes it’s a nervous system reaction, anxiety... wish people would stop replying to calls for help & reassurance with problems or doom & gloom.
Sorry to be blunt but you won’t find many people on here that have gotten better as they don’t bother to very often they get on with life..
Infact julian Cowan hill has a you tube video on staying off catastophising threads...
Yes people ask for help and reassurances just reply to a cry for help with worse makes it very hard for people in a crisis not to get worse or reinforce the anxiety
I think it's different for everyone . Some of us do ' get on with our lives' even when tinnitus is extremely debilitating . I have gone from full time work to struggling to hear through the hiss and am in constant pain because of the intensity - but i still see my friends, still volunteer with homeless people and my football team's supporters . is my tinnitus better - definitely not and the pain is like nothing i have ever experienced ( apart from migraines). I think it's different for everyone. I would love just a tint reduction in volume and pain but as that isn't going to happen ( I have no income to pay for treatment) , I have to just try as best I can.
Just a word of warning R, there are always people who are ready to make money out of others misfortune. There really isn't any 'cure' for tinnitus one reason being there are a multitude of reasons as to why people get it.
You will learn to live with it as they say, but it does take time. As I write this my head is undulating with the loud noise of my tinnitus, but the difference is that after 15 months although I hate it I can just get on with what I want to do in spite of it.
If you want to do some reading perhaps the book 'living with tinnitus and hyperacusis by Dr L McKenna and Dr Baguley, think that's right😁 Would be helpfull as they are professionals in the tinnitus world.
You might be able to buy it from the BTA website, I'm not sure, otherwise I got mi e from that big online shop beginning with an A.
Yes i have this book and reading it bit by bit but as my tinnitus so loud i struggle concentrating.i saw dr.baguely in nottingham and the book was ons things he suggested but did say needs lot of updating as its from 2010 im back to see him again on 4th to try some white noise generators (iv been wearing my old ones from years and years ago still work) but hopefully new ones will be better sound quality.
Im also going to the tinnitus expo conference in birmingham on 15th september with my partner which i think will be helpful.
Iv just never had it this loud and its awful and unbearable n causing me lot of anxiety and doesnt help i have constant cold symptoms due to my fibromyalgia and getting blocked eustachian tubes end of july still stuffy and not cleared but i cant get rid of stuff have it months or long term just wish could get rid of tinnitus!!!
I'm also experiencing T spike at present, has been bad for the past week or so.
Sounds like alot of us are experiencing similar spikes at present.
Mine's due to damage from a single loud noise event, nothing can stop it ...................... nothing to do with retraining my brain is going to help.
I try to keep positive, it's restricted usually to just a comment to my wife "tinnitus is reaaaalllly bad today".
There are alot of cures etc being put forward out there and always people looking to benefit from other peoples misery , I just go by the old adage "if it sounds too good to be true it probably is" and try to get on with my life instead.
Hopefully climatic conditions or whatever is causing the spike (aliens, wasps, CIA, sunflower pollen, sunspots etc,- who knows) will change and things will get a bit more bearable soon.
Hi hope you have managed to get your tinitus under control now as you posted a month ago. I have tinitus as well, woke up one morning with severe tinitus in both sides of my head almost 4months ago now. I have seen a consultant had the hearing tests pressure tests and all seem fine, ear drums and outer ears all good. The tinitus is causing extreme migraines as well at least 2 a week with lots of head pressure. My migraine at present has lasted 3days to date, I have an Mri scan today hopefully that will go well. Has anyone else suffered with the awful migraines as well as head pressure? I have hit a white noise machine by my bed now and that helps me go off to sleep, it doesn't mask the tinitus but helps distract enough to sleep. I also have an appointment at the tinitus clinic any one else been to one of these. My life is really affected by the tinitus that much that I have also had to adapt work to it. Any suggestions from any one that has tinitus so bad. Thank you kerry.
