I've been diagnosed with Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) and Hypothyroidism as well as LADA almost a year ago. I can't see anything about SHPT on Health Unlocked Is this so rare?

I am currently researching parathyroid issues as my PTH was mildly elevated but calcium level fine. This forum has a wealth off information on thyroid, you can use search bar for topics relevant to you. There isn’t much info her on the parathyroid but a useful group on fb facebook.com/groups/Parathy...

Have they discovered what caused the parathyroid issues?

Thanks for replying Louise, last march I went to my surgery to have a blood test as I wasn't feeling well at all, I was extremely tired, my husband was complaining that my attention span was minimal, I was very thirsty and slept a lot., the next day a doctor from my surgery said that I had to go immediately to the hospital as my sugar level were sky high. so I went and for the following 14 days I saw 7 specialist that diagnosed me with vitamin D deficiency , osteoporosis, hypothyroidism and secondary HPT due to decrease blood levels of calcium. Also after thinking I had type 2 and then type 1, they diagnosed Latent autoimmune diabetes in adulthood (LADA).

so I'm taking colecalciferol 800IU equivalent to 20micrigrams of vitamin D3 and 50micrograms of levothyroxine, both once a day and almost immediately I felt 10 years younger and I could run and jump., before the hospital I was walking with a stick!.

Have they said what is causing the shpt ? Is your pth level raised ?

My husband has shpt due to kidney failure and he takes Cinacalcet which reduces the pth level.

It is possible to have primary hpth with a low/normal calcium.

I don't know anything about hyperparathyroidism, secondary or otherwise, but this website may have something helpful to say :

parathyroid.com/

According to wikipedia :

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) refers to the excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the parathyroid glands in response to hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels) and associated hyperplasia of the glands. This disorder is especially seen in patients with chronic kidney failure

It may be worth your while asking if anyone can help on the Early CKD Support forum on HU :

healthunlocked.com/early-ck...

Are your doctors keeping tabs on your kidney health?

If you have low blood calcium levels, has anyone tested your vitamin D? Calcium is often low when vitamin D is low, and calcium levels will increase if vitamin D levels increase. A few people can't tolerate supplementing vitamin D very well (although it isn't common) even if they have a deficiency, but I have read that some people with this problem find it reduces or disappears if they supplement magnesium and vitamin K2 for a while before adding in vitamin D3 supplements. (Sorry I don't have a link, and I may have got this factoid wrong.) It might be a long shot, but worth trying? Lots of us on this forum supplement magnesium and vitamin K2 as well as vitamin D3 (if necessary) - all of them are very helpful to people with hypothyroidism.

Regarding your hypothyroidism... Do you have copies of your blood test results for thyroid, thyroid antibodies, vitamins and minerals? If you do, please post them including reference ranges. You are legally entitled to copies in the UK. We can't cure people of hypothyroidism but we might be able to give you some pointers to helping yourself to feel a bit better.

If you do decide to take any supplements, due to your existing health problems I would suggest starting cautiously with a very low dose.

humanbean, thank you very much for your reply., your suggestion to see parathyroid.com was extremely helpful, the videos are excellent. I am already on colecalciferol 800IU equivalent to 20micrigrams of vitamin D3 and 50micrograms of levothyroxine, both once a day. No I don't have copies of blood test results for thyroid, thyroid antibodies, vitamins and minerals but I ask the endocrinologist on my next appointment. Again , thanks.

Hi,

I have secondary hyperparathyroidism caused by malabsorption. My parathyroid was raised, calcium blood test normal but 24 hour urine was low. It had caused significant bone loss but when calcium was replaced it improved.
