Hi all since having a flu virus a couple of weeks back i feel things are not quite right as for the last week i feel hyper symptons of trembling, fast heart, palps, breathlessness, tight throat, anxious and cant sleep due to this-just like my hyper days when diagnosis back in july, i feel shocking at the moment, i know i need my bloods doing immediatley as i was going this morning but feel so horrid, i am going tomorrow morning as i may need a increase in carbi now as im on titration dose of 2.5mgs, i am just wandering if other people have had this problem of having a bug/virus and it has started symptons again? I was feeling sort of normal before being poorly.xx
I feel hyper again😲: Hi all since having a flu... - Thyroid UK
I feel hyper again😲
Sorry, you're not feeling well, RMichelle. I hope it's a hangover from the flu and not hyperthyroidism again.
Im hoping so, can viruses do this to the thyroid? I did read on another post this is possible but i am due bloods tomorrow so it will show in them. 😊
Personally I would delay bloods as you may well end up with a false result.
It's quite likely the after effects of flu, I've also recently had it and I still feel pretty grim, not been out for well over a week and I don't yet feel able to leave the house.
Snap- i last went out properly around a week ago as i felt ok andcthen the next day started with hyper symptons. 😨
Rmichelle,
You need to use the Reply button underneath bantam12 's post or she won't be alerted you have replied.
I know it's affected me as my heartrate has been high, I'm breathless and slight shakiness, I'm just going to ride it out.
Thats made me feel better in knowing that-sorry not saying great you feel like me!! Why does it affect us thyroid people? It is just like being hyper.i hate it.☺. Have you had anything like this before?
I've had both hyper and hypo for many many years so yes anything can knock us out, any surgery or illness I've had has always knocked me off course.
I really do hope it is a blip, i will ride it out for a few more days then, just made a cuppa and put the cup on a little tray but whilst putting it down i was shaking and the cup fell off and tea went everywhere.!! Now more breathless with clearing it up-ridiculous!!😨 it's pants.lol thankyou bantam.x
But.......... RMichelle isnt hypo, she's hyper and on Carbimazole to keep the production of thyroid hormone low and hopefully, put her into remission. If she stps the medication there is a risk of her thyroid producing too much hormone and she may end up having a thyroid storm - sometimes fatal, always horrendous.
I have never taken gps or endos word for it, your guess is wrong as ive never increased dose and just titrated down-i have changed my diet!! Gluten free as im celiac and soya free. I have no intention of increasing my dose unless my levels show any different!! If we need the meds then we have to take it or die, sorry but ii would rather take carbi than use cannabis!! Subject closed on that one.😊
There is more than one reason why Carbimazole may not work, but if like me you had extreme Graves symptoms, it may just save your life.
Over treatment with Carbimazole is so common, making people suffer hypo symptoms. Hashimoto is often mistaken for hyper/Graves as tests may be done in the 'hyper' stage. Some people are diagnosed with Graves when they have hyperthyroidism and it is often brought on by things like pregnancy. If left the symptoms often abate and levels go back to normal.
Many people on forums do not give all the details, so it is often difficult to find out exactly what is wrong - and it may have nothing to do with any antithyroid medication they are on.
On the other hand Carbimazole can cause all sorts of nasties but some of us dont have a choice.
Hopefully just a blip, but we all know getting run down can make us feel worse. I would go for your blood test as planned - if your thyroid has kicked off again, you need to get on top of it as soon as possible.
Thankyou valarian i havent done yet but my plan is to go thursday 1st thing in morning a couple more days will be ok-just dont want a false result incase it is a hangover from the flu like bantam suggested.xx
so tell them you've had flu - ask them to write it on the blood test form. Just thinking, after all this time, you don't want to be hyper again ! (And hey, if they say you'll need them redone in a fortnight, your arm is already a pincushion anyway !)
Rmichelle is being treated for HYPERthyroidism, not HYPOthyroidism.
The science direct article you've linked refers to Carbamazepine, an ANTI-EPILEPTIC drug, rather than Carbimazole, which is ANTI-THYROID treatment.
The thread you've linked asks whether taking too much Carbimazole can make you hypothyroid. Since its job is to suppress thyroid function, there is no surprise that this is a possibility, but this is due to over-medication, and typically easily resolved with a dose change.
For those of us who are hyPERthyroid, our dosage is usually changed in response to a blood test, not some doctor's whim as you suggest. Before we were taking carbimazole, most of us felt very sick indeed: our hearts and metabolisms were racing, we had trembling hands, our concentration was shot to pieces and sometimes, if we sat down on the floor, we were unable to get up. Without treatment, we were at risk of serious heart disease, and most of the time we were really struggling with daily life.
Most of us are well aware of the potential side-effects of carbimazole, but few strong drugs are without side effects, so it's always a balance of risk. If we thought a few simple dietary changes could resolve hyPERthyroidism, we would all be overjoyed - if you've seen any "extensive research" on this subject, please let us know ! If you don't know of any such miracle diets, I can't but wonder at you recommending Rmichelle to stop taking her prescribed medication, and change what she is eating. Thankfully, I'm sure she is much too sensible to take any notice of your suggestion.
Retal, anyone on carbimazole will have been warned about this - it's a specific condition that is very rare (my endo said he had seen 6 cases in 30 years of specialism), but because of the implications, we are all given information on what to do in the event of specific sore throat/mouth ulcer conditions. This isn't connected with normal sore throats, the common cold, or flu.
Thankyou-had last bloods done december time but did go january 19th and they lost them!!3rd time-great in my area,eh.x
