How is hypothyroidism treated??

I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and when I did the ultrasound the result was enlarged thyroid but the problem is the doctor didn't give me any medicine..I usually have headache, pain in neck ,tiredness, memory loss and painful cramps during menstrual..

Please go straight back to your doctor or see a different Doctor at the practice.

Hypothyroidism needs treatment with Levothyroxine. Also monitoring. You could ask to be referred to an Endocrinologist urgently.

The Endocrinologist will note all your symptoms and do more tests if necessary first. (Mine did full blood tests and Short Synacthen Test to check my adrenals first ).

Do you know what blood tests you had done?

Where you also tested for Thyroid Antibodies? If these are raised you may have Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

However you need to be prescribed Levothyroxine. The start dose is low as we cannot go straight on to the full dose as this is dangerous, it has to be increased gradually.

You would start on 25mcg or 50mcg. Have your blood tested again in 6 to 8 weeks and be given an increase in dose. You would probably be seen by the Endocrinologist for three appointments then monitored by your doctor.

Whoever treats you whether GP or Consultant Endocrinologist - you must receive treatment. Also ask for full diagnosis.

Ask if you have Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis.
