To help anyone provide a useful and helpful answer, could you please add a bit of information? Like why you are taking carbimazole? How long? Always same dose? Once, twice or three times a day? Any blood test results.

firstly I don't think that cabimazole is made in 15mgs - I believe it comes as 5mg or 20 mg only - , secondly your eye problem sounds very much like T.E.D.[ thyroid eye disease ] which is reasonably easy to treat ... if you have the right consultant - my lady has been treated by a superb consultant and dept at moorefields [ p.m. me if you want info ] - ......hope this helps alan

Couldn't agree more Alan, if Sheilax' eye has become enlarged then she needs to ask to be referred to an eye specialist with experience in TED asap and catch it early on - also remember how pleased you were with the person your lady saw.

totally agree with you .... the earlier the better , it takes some time to sort the full problem but with the correct attention and treatment it will be able to be managed and treated ....... my lady is still being managed and overseen by the consultant at moorefields [ Mr d.v. ] and I can only give my opinion of him ==== SUPERB ==== the department is ADNEXAL [ specifically for t.e.d. ] .... I have nothing but compliments for their entire service .......alan x

We see different approaches, but it is quite usual for someone to have their carbimazole dose reduced once their thyroid hormone levels drop. Maybe you could do well on 10mg a day instead of 15?

I hope some people who have gone through this respond - I have not.

Ask your consultant if they are dosing based on your ft3 and ft4 numbers or on the tsh. If they re waiting ont your tsh to move then there is a problem. Look at these guidelines here - fpnotebook.com/Endo/Pharm/A...

Carb dose should be based on the lowest dose that keeps your ft4 at the TOP end of the range. If your dose is pushing you into the low end of the range then not only could you get symptoms of hypo but a ft4 that's too low actually increases your antibodies which could very well be contributing to aggravating your Thyroid eye issue. Check out this link and also elainemoore.com who is a specialist and then I would talk to your consultant again when you feel informed and armed with info. Many consultants are trying to treat graves disease as if it's a thyroidistis - it is not!!

Cat4health,

I agree. There certainly is a problem in using TSH.

Commonly TSH levels do not "bounce up" when thyroid hormone levels drop in people who have been hyperthyroid for some time - sometimes for at least months.

Helvella, it's so frustrating isn't it? The last time I was sick my t-shirt stayed suppressed for years! But I was healthy. Elaine Moore, and I know I obsessively quote her but she's awesome, says the antibodies actually work on the pituitary too which keeps the t-shirt suppressed regardless of ft3&4 levels.

gotta think of some other acronyms of the other tests now though ---- ft3/ft4/ferretin/folate etc. ..... time to get the grey matter working methinks !!!!
