I am on carbimazole 15mg per day. I rarely drink but one glass of wine has me vomiting, diarrhoea and hangover for 2 days. Is this normal?

Not for me.....had to cut down, was on 40mg day now only on 5mg every other day..... maybe it was the wine, go more upmarket and organic - if you are drinking less and Prosecco supposed to be better....xx

The Summary of Product Characteristics for Carbimazole says:

Carbimazole tablets should be used with caution in patients with mild-moderate hepatic insufficiency. If abnormal liver function is discovered, the treatment should be stopped. The half-life may be prolonged due to the liver disorder.

If I were you, I would be asking for appropriate liver function tests as I suspect that what you describe could be caused by "abnormal liver function". Especially if all alcoholic drinks do this (maybe you only drink wine, in which case you'd obviously not know this!)

Combining lithium and iodine stops hyperthyroid.

It was on a series of lectures on the internet if I remember.

Hi,

I'm hypo not hyper but can rarely drink. I'm pretty much intolerant to alcohol, even hand gel from hospital. It gives me very bad headaches within hours. Feel I have worst hangover for upto 48 hours. Occasionally I'm sick. This I've had for more than 10 years before diagnosis. What I'm trying to get too is it might be thyroid intolerance rather than the meds.

I hope it helps.

Seem to be intolerant to many chemicals on current MP Levo and Wockhardt, but wasn't while on Eltroxin, so think it must a drug interaction. Can no longer have my hair coloured as it causes excessive coughing. Janet.

I am PTU and the pharmacist told me not to drink at all as the PTU can cause liver damage. I don't know if carbimazole is the same but ask your pharmacist and they will tell you if wine is ok or not. Alcohol is always best avoided if on long term medication - unfortunately.
