You have to get a copy of your blood test results, with the ranges, and post them on a new question. Someone will comment on them.

Thx, my ranges are TFT 0.49, tsh 0.61mu/l, free t4 15.3pmol/L free triiodothyronine 4.5pmol/L. Do any of these cover the thyroid antibodies test? Thx for help n advice on what else I can do

They don't cover antibodies so you would have to request one.

Maybe someone who has Graves or hyper will be able to help, although we do need to have the ranges of the above tests .

Agreed with shaws - thyroid function tests do NOT include antibody tests. TFT is usually interpreted as a cascade of tests. Do TSH - if the result of that is odd, do an FT4, if still odd then maybe do FT3.

I do not understand what you have posted. What does the 0.49 apply to?

You seem to have posted the actual results of your tests not the reference ranges. For example, for TSH the reference range could be 0.30 to 3.50. These ranges are essential to interpretation.

BTW - Many people here have difficulty reading posts for various reasons. Using txt spk (the sort of abbreviations used in SMS text messages) can make it ever more difficult. Please try to stick with ordinary English.

Hi This as been going on for years by many doctors, ignorant! Yes, you may have depression but far more likely to be the thyroid. If you were put on treatment for depression it would muddle the waters, also not nice drugs unless needed, then good.

You need a TSH, T4 and definitely a Free T3 too, with ranges. If GP will not do them, I suspect he just did TSH,, then if pos have them on line, but do not go through a private hospital, very costly. I use Blue Horizon, there is finger prick or venous blood but only do the latter if someone can draw your blood, ie when having other blood done. Quote TUK 10 for a discount, between £60- £70 about. all done by you, then show a GP if wish. All sent out to you that you need.

Best wishes,

Jackie

Hi Jackie, thanks so much for your reply it was very helpful and informative . The test results are confusing me, got a read out from my gp and next to the free t4 test results it says 15.3pmo/L (12.0-22.0) are these the ranges? Thanks for your help

Hi Yes, that sounds OK but may be a little low for you. However, it is just as important to have the Free T3 done at the same time ( + of course the TSH) it then gives the overall picture. Also if seem OK and still think it is your thyroid, have a retest in 3 months. If on Beta Blockers never take them in the morning of the test, false result.Yes, it has been the case for sometime that psyches often use a low level of thyroxine , in desperate cases. although not as simple as because they think the fault is with the thyroid, a long way from that, they just know it might help and it is a very low dose.

best wishes,

Jackie

Hi sandy, thx so much for your reply will take all the information on board. Seeing a new gp this week hopefully .

Hi Gardener-girl, lab tests can be really confusing, I think what you're saying is the following:

TSH 0.49 or 0.61? (range 0.27 - 4.2)

Free T4 15.3 (range 12 - 22)

Free T3 4.5 (range 3.9 - 6.7)

I would say you are not hyperthyroid from those results. The TSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, which tells your thyroid to produce more thyroid hormone (T4, T3 etc). Normally in hyperthyroid states the T4 and T3 are significantly above range, as the thyroid is producing too much. So in response, the pituitary stops producing TSH because it doesn't want to stimulate things further. This is why the TSH of hypers is usually pretty much zero.

Having said all that, your T4 and T3 are quite low in range, but your TSH is also low, it is perhaps not communicating as it should. It would be good to know what your symptoms are, and it would also be good if you could get your doctor to test B12, folate, iron, ferritin and vitamin D. Nutritional deficiencies can play havoc with our bodies and if we sort them out we can improve our thyroid function.

So go back to your doc and say if he thinks it isn't your thyroid then it may be a deficiency in one of these other things, and I would also ask them to test your adrenals.

Hi Hampster, thanks so much for your informative and helpful reply. Had my b12, folate, iron done and all okay there so will ask about vit d and ferritin thanks. Did think about asking for my adrenal to be checked. My symptons are severe fatigue, low moods, anxiety with panic attacks, weight loss with increased appetite, no periods for 9 months, irritable bowel syndrome, hot flushes, disrupted sleep. Thanks for your advice.

If you've got the results of the other tests it's worth posting them, being in the normal range doesn't mean being optimal. H x
