Hi all. Due to my history of IBS and recent back nerve pain and sciatica I've had to resort to taking glycerine suppositories on a daily basis. I was a bit concerned about dependence, etc but GP said was OK while I've got current problem. Anyone else been using these on a daily basis without concern? Thanks

Hey there, yes I take them daily as per gastro advice. Unfortunately it was either that or take a weekly enema, which I find quite different to administer!

No medical problem per se, but i have found myself using them as my main source of evacuation rather than emphasis on me developing a healthy toilet routine for winter.

I too use up to three each morning to promote some BM sometimes I manage without, but never feel it’s complete. My team are aware of this, no suggestion it’s hindering any natural occurrence- offered irrigation, yet to try but using these, whilst time consuming and tedious I cope better most days to function, Trying to limit to one - like yourself worried irrigation will send me back to no sensation and total reliance, avoid all laxatives where possible as misuse of these has led to my dysfunction. I currently have a broken back so think it’s ok, whilst in such pain to help things along - keep me up dated , thanks x

I have been taking pairs of glycerine suppositories for over 30 years daily. Sometimes I have to take more than one pair a day no problems.

Yes, I also need to use suppositories on a daily basis. I’ve had a couple of bowel obstructions due to lack of function of my bowel. I was so sick and in pain

There seems to be agreement amongst all the older non-corporate gut-health specialists (IBS Group, the authors of IBS Take Control/The Bowel Book etc) that glycerine suppositories are safe to use daily as maintenance if you need to.

Hi. Yes I still find I need to use glycerine suppositories when I feel somewhat constipated. I feel as if I should need to go but not ready. When I go it's formed and soft so not sure why I should struggle? I then take a laxido daily until I manage to go naturally. Then I have to stop this for couple of weeks and so the cycle begins! Familiar story with you guys? Thanks

Hi my GP has asked me to try dulcolax along with a laxido. Not had dulcolax before. Anyone tried it? Ta

Dulcolax suppositories are part of my arse-nal of fixes - far more powerful (and "irritating", be warned) than glycerin. However I recently got into a conversation about this on another website - UK chemists in some districts are refusing to sell them to people, falsely claiming that they're prescription only, which they're not (look it up).
