Injectafer

I had an infusion of Injectafer 750 mg on April 29 and had labs drawn exactly 8 weeks later per advice or information on this lifeline :) Now I would truly appreciate hearing some fellow RLS sufferers thoughts and advice on iron infusion and medications.

I have had four iron infusions in the last 2 years. 10 weeks ago I received Injectafer 1000 mg with so-so results. I had seen a hematologist at my neurologist/Sleep specialist’s urging out of his concern for my out of whack lab numbers. The hematologist was not concerned.

These infusions, including Injectafer, were clearly not designed with RLS in mind. The intent was to get bodily stores of iron up.

It sounds like alot of RLS patients are getting this somewhat newer Injectafer infusion, yet like iron sucrose it uses a double sugar called maltose - I believe. Sucrose and maltose do not readily cross the blood brain barrier from what I read, but I could be confused.

My GP has said that it would be dangerous to administer an Injectafer while I am pregnant. My obstetrician has prescribed that I take 200mg Ferrous Sulphate 3X per day, orally.

These are INFeD and Injectafer and are about GBP300 so the cost variation is in what they charge for the process.

I was just wondering for those of you who have had an Injectafer iron infusion, did you have any complications or side effects? I finally managed to get one (1000 mg in a saline solution) in Sydney on Thursday (five days ago).

First, some good news: I am now 6 weeks past my iron infusion (1000 mg ferrous carboxymaltose, or InjectaFer, which raised my ferritin from 18 to 289). I am now getting [i]significant[/i] reduction in my RLS symptoms.

You should also be aware that only certain iron formulations (INFeD and Injectafer) are beneficial for RLS patients.
