It’s happened again!

Passing out and no clue why. I have had lots of back problems and two lots of surgery. There has been suggestions of my blood pressure being high as a result of some sort of compression before surgery but now it seems my blood pressure is low. I’ve been passing out fairly infrequently but sitting down so now I can’t drive. I do however feel constantly exhausted, and regularly feel like I may have a fever (clammy light headed and look like a grey waxwork model) and sometimes struggle with concentration.

Has anyone got experience like mine? I never used to pass out until my neck got bad I hoped the surgery would have fixed it but now I worry I will lose my job and lifestyle as they can’t find any cause so far- help!

Hello, I have had a response from my colleague which I hope helps:

From the information you share it is not immediately obvious as to the cause of your loss of consciousness. Low blood pressure can be a trigger but this would not normally occur when you are sitting. STARS has a Blackout Checklist which can be downloaded from our website stars.org.uk. You do not say whether you have been referred to a cardiologist/electrophysiologist who are heart rhythm experts. It is to these specialists a patient should be referred if they are experiencing unexplained loss of consciousness. You mention that these episodes started with your bad neck following surgery. Carotid sinus hypersensitivity is a common cause of syncope. The carotid sinus is part of the major artery supplying blood to the head. Any movement that causes stimulation of that area like turning the head, looking up and stretching can cause syncope. This might be an area a consultant could investigate. I hope this helps you find a diagnosis.

Thanks, yes I’ve been reviewed in hospital and am being followed up in cardiology, I guess I’m on the waiting list now. My GP has done more blood tests too. I’ve been through your web site and the checklist which has been very useful.
