How many times have you heard someone say “that was my wakeup call”?

Sometimes people experience a true “slap in the face” moment of motivation. A realization that action is needed. Suddenly change became more easy. Like choosing to lose a lot of weight after a heart attack.

Choice and change need motivation.

Do we always need the short sharp shock of a health emergency to get that wakeup call? Or can we find motivation before the negative event happens?

Well, according to a group of medical practitioners, there is a simple method that helps us focus on what really matters to us in a way that releases our inner motivation – it’s called motivational interviewing.

This is a something that Start Moving Start Living uses at some of its “Operation Change” educational seminars.

It’s a technique used to help you find the energy to do the things you know you should do, but you need to break through your existing habits to change.

As everyone who has tried to lose weight will agree, change is hard!

With motivational interviewing, someone asks you questions to get you thinking about the things in your life that you want most value and enjoy, the things you want to preserve and protect by staying healthy and mobile.

Sometimes we need to be reminded that we can lose the things we take for granted unless we change.

What if you can’t attend an Operation Change program? You can still think about tapping into your “inner motivation coach”.

Look at some examples in this week’s poll. If you try it it can help you think about what really matters to you, and it connects healthy lifestyle change to the positive things that make your life meaningful.
