‼️ Did you know that around half of melanoma cases arise on the lower limb, yet melanoma of the foot and lower leg has an outstanding misdiagnosis rate of 36%!
Acral lentiginous melanoma of the plantar surface is the only type of melanoma which arises equally across all skin types and late or misdiagnosis of this particular form of melanoma has a significantly higher mortality rate (33%).
There are several other forms of melanoma that arise with varied appearance and with many benign conditions being very common on the foot, identifying a rare occurrence of melanoma among them can be challenging. This contributes significantly to delayed diagnosis, with malignant lesions often undetected for longer periods and diagnosed at later stages, resulting in poor prognosis.
With over 3,500 avoidable deaths from skin cancer every year, it is crucial for foot health practitioners to access appropriate training.
Skcin are proud to be working with the SMAE Institute, to train members how to identify and interpret signs and symptoms of potential skin cancers and demonstrate appropriate clinical decision-making in taking action to refer or sign-post patients to appropriate colleagues or services.
Education is our most powerful weapon in combatting this major public health concern, in improving patient outcomes and in saving lives from this devastating disease.
Reviewed by the British Association of Dermatologists and accredited by the Royal College of Podiatry, Skcin’s award winning training is a must for anyone working in foot health.
