How skin cancer develops

Around 90% of skin cancers develop because unrepaired DNA damage to the skin cells caused by over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun and/or sunbeds triggers mutations that cause the cells to reproduce abnormally (grow out-of-control) and form tumours.

As they grow and divide without stopping, they can metastasize, which means they can spread to other places in your body through your lymphatic system.

If detected, diagnosed and treated early enough, almost all skin cancers are curable. However, if left undetected melanoma and in rarer cases, squamous cell carcinoma can become fatal.

CHECK YOUR SKIN ONCE A MONTH FOR THE EARLY WARNING SIGNS AND SEEK IMMEDIATE ADVICE FROM A QUALIFIED HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONER WITH ANY CONCERNS.

For all the advice, guidance and self-management tools you need to reduce your risk of skin cancer and detect the early warning signs - install the Skcin App on your mobile device today!

Go to: app.skcin.org (using Safari on iOS (Apple) or Chrome on Android)

Tap ‘INSTALL’ and ‘Add to Home Screen’
