Hi. I was on methadone. It will work quickly so you just need to try a quarter pill more and see if 7.5 mgs works to completely stop the rls. I did the same thing-the 5mg didn't cover my rls. Opioids can keep people awake, too, so you may need a little something extra for sleep.
For now, you most likely just need a bit more to stop the rls. So try that. Some people need only 5 mgs but many need 7, 10, 15 and some spread doses out.
Just make sure you don't run out of the methadone as the withdrawal is brutal.
In my case, methadone started working better over a period of weeks/months. There's a number of studies showing that methadone has a neuroprotective effect over time. That might just be it.
And just to be sure, you're on 5mg and not 0.5mg? 0.5 is the lowest dose. It would be standard to start you there, but it will need to be increased.
I've been taking 10 mg per day for 4 years, and it has been covering my symptoms well. Sometimes I split the 5 mg pills with a splitter and take 7.5 mg at first and the other 2.5 a few hours later. Sometimes I take 5 mg at first, and the other 5 mg later. In other words, my symptoms vary, so my dosage varies. The methadone regime has save my life. Best of luck!
I think that only 5 mg per 24 hours may just be too little to get the relief you're looking for.
Methadone has literally been a lifesaver for me. I started with 10 mg and needed 15 mg to get results. It’s a miracle. After decades of zero sleep or possibly 30 minutes max per night of sleep, with Methadone I get 5 hours or more. I take it once daily at about 6 pm.I have not needed any increase. Many other narcotics were useless tome. I live in Australia and count myself lucky to be able to get the Methadone.it’s a miracle.
I had severe side effects from Methadone. Vomiting and nausea, could note at and had no relief. Tried other opioids but no relief from RLS. I have been off ropinirole for nearly six weeks and no relief. Opioids seem not to work for me. I get really doped up. I lost my balance and fell and ended up in ICU with a brain bleed. Now off all opioids and Xanax. Still have no relief. Been thinking of Katram but that also seems to have some serious side effects. On good nights I can get about 3 hrs max of sleep. I feel I am going crazy. Hadanironinfusion and iron results are now good.
Oh my! What dose of Methadone were you on? The typical starting dose is 5mg increasing up to a max of 15mg. It’s very unusual for Methadone, at these low doses, to cause any euphoric effects at all. Do you routinely get your serum ferritin level and transferrin levels checked?
I was taking 5 twice a day. Had an iron infusion last spring and iron levels are now good. Thinking of maybe trying methadone once again but dread the side effects.
