How long did it take your GP to make a referral to a neurologist or movement disorder specialist from onset of symptoms?

Actually the GP did not do anything at all despite me writing letters to her. She did not even bother to respond. She also did not want to discuss the condition of my wife with me her husband claiming patient confidentiality. So in the end we had to arrange for a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for Health and Wellbeing to shut her up. As far as the referral to a neurologist, I had to insist on it and only then did she make the referral.

The GP was really quick to refer my husband to neuro - the problem was that the GP eventually had to ask the neuro clinic to fax him their findings/meds. recommendations due to slowness in getting the letter typed (after five-six weeks!). As a former med.sec. who had to transcribe the shorthand the next day I found it very frustrating.

I wasnt around at the time of diagnoses but I know it took a long time, I think they were doing a lot of other tests before hand but as the symtoms for early onset were falling over occassionally and slight mood swings it was very hard to detect. As im sure many people have it for a long time without even going to the doctor as the symptoms can be so sporadic.

The GP referred my partner to a speech and language therapist as he was having problems with speaking, it was the SLT who referred.
