Update : hifu didnt work

Hi, just keeping everyone updated. The HIFU from July didn't get all the cancer and missed the the most important Gleason 7 in left anterior region. Now I have to get salvage radiation (another hifu is another 15k).

Probably going to do Cyberknife.

Key learning : Hifu still experimental and success very dependent on experience and skill of doc. MI had mine at NYU Langone with Taneja.

Good lesson - I think it is being oversold. FDA never approved it for prostate cancer -no one knows if it is effective, and what it takes to be effective. Anyway - there's every hope that CyberKnife will get the rest of it.

What kind of imaging did you have to get a good picture of cancer in the prostate? My doctor proposed HIFU (also NYU Langone) as a middle ground between active surveillance and prostatectomy. I thought HIFU was 25k?

Yes..it was 25k

One man in our cancer support group in Providence RI has had a similar story with HIFU. I agree with Tall_Allen: where are the data?

My psa 8 months post HIFU is 0.02. Was 12 before. Proton beam was my first treatment that missed.

Now that IS shocking. I thought proton beam was the best radiation treatment you could get.

Its a great treatment. Many have had success. Somehow I had a small area in the lower right quandrant that stayed dormant for many years but started growing again.

All treatments have a chance of reoccurrence.

Wow my American Brothers ! that is expensive. I had HIFU in London with the best Professor of it, but it was salvage as I had previous Radiotherapy, which also failed, my wallet was not hurt at all ?, 25 k Dollars is a huge sum, My options now seem to be Bicalutamide until someone invents something better.

Read my post 'HIFU and Metabolic Control'. I had HIFU 6 months ago across two large areas Gleeson 3+4. My peak pre-op PSA was 8.1, after HIFU 1.4ng/ml at 3 months, 1.2ng/ml at 6 months. I am on Care Oncology Protocol as a precaution, and LOTS of other stuff. My Sonic Screwdriver man said to expect a 70% PSA reduction as a good indicator. Sorry to tell my American cousins that the whole enterprise cost me not a single bean.

that's great. mine dropped from about 7 to 1.0 then doubled in a couple months so Cyberknife is up next.....
