How to get fruit and veg intake during pregnancy when everywhere says they’re some of the most dangerous things to eat?!

Everywhere says to be so careful about eating fruit and veg because if the high risk of food poisoning from soil etc., but then how do I continue to eat healthy and get nutrients?

I understand for when eating out but what about fruit and veg at home, is it enough to wash everything I eat beforehand or do I need to avoid raw fruit and veggies completely?

Im usually very good at eating my five a day but I’m scared to eat anything now!

Thanks for any advice

Just wash you fruit and veg as normal. Nothing extra is required.

If it’s ‘everywhere’ that says this I have never ever seen it!?? Are you in the UK?

Just eat your fruit and veg as normal talk to your midwife if you have worries over it but I’m sure they will reassure you that there is no reason to worry 😊

The only thing I read was to make sure you wash the fruit and veg properly. I also peeled carrots which I dont normally do as I couldn't get all the mud off.

The only veg to be a bit careful of is homegrown if you get cats in the garden. Commercial stuff just wash/peel. Xx

Try eating organic fruit and vege, but I know it's expensive. Waitrose is great for organic food. I try to eat organic where possible. And as others have mentioned, just thoroughly wash the fruit and vege.

Thanks everyone 😘

Just wash it. I had it all the way through my pregnancy, I never read that it was dangerous.

I can totally understand your fear since I have had these concerns when I was pregnant. I used to wash fruits (apples, pears, berries, etc) really well and would buy salads which were already washed. The thing is to wash salad and veggies to take off the grit and the sand ( In know for examples some carrots are sold with soil in some organic shops). Fruit purees are also very good and easy to make (or you can buy them). I also used to eat veggies either in purees, baked with pasteurised cheese and cream, boiled in water or fried in olive oil and garlic. I also used to make my own apple pie, with apple puree and organic apples, which was quite nutritious. And of course, I loved making my own soups with the blender. I was also very cautious with take away food and avoided them during my pregnancy, especially in the first three months. My baby is now 5 and a half month and she is perfectly healthy:) Good luck with your diet and feel free to eat what you fancy, while following the NHS guidance:)
