I need some advise how to get my GP to refer me to a gynecologist consultant to run some tests, to get some answers why I keep having miscarriages. The only problem it is that my GP keep saying that I need to have 3 misscariages to be qualified to have those tests done.
I am over 35 and had 2 miscarriages in a row and they have to help me somehow, NHS must offer me some kind of help.
I would appreciate if anyone knows anything what to do in this situation or maybe someone has been through something similar.
Thank you ladies.

I’m so sorry for your losses 🥲 I wasn’t allowed to be referred on the Nhs to a miscarriage specialist until I hit 3 losses in a row- I’d had a chemical pregnancy before my 2 year old daughter ( who took us 7 years to conceive! ) then after my daughter we lost our daughter Amelia at 20 weeks pregnant but still didn’t qualify did a full post mortem which came back with no answers to her sudden and unexpected death. We then had another chemical pregnancy they still refused it wasn’t until I had another loss at 7 weeks did the early pregnancy unit refer us. I had blood test to check various blood clotting disorders which is the only “proven “ treatment to make a difference to recurring miscarriages according to my specialist. I was also tested for thyroid but the lab mucked up my results 😒 she did agree to the steroids that I had had with my daughter Francesca ( raised nk cells) They didn’t find anything to explain my losses I assumed it was my age ( 39) and likely a numbers game if we kept trying eventually we might have a successful pregnancy. I took a month off trying for the tests ( my choice -my body needed a rest) had my Covid vaccination then we conceived again and my baby is due to arrive next month! I’m really anxious and finding the anxiety overwhelming to the point I am going to push to be induced earlier ( my baby is looking quite bigot growth scans !) Miscarriages and the loss of our daughter has robbed the joy away from this pregnancy.
Were the pregnancies naturally conceived or IVF as when it’s IVF I’ve heard they will refer you to a miscarriage specialist after 2 instead of 3. It’s such a barbaric rule to make women suffer 3 in a row. I know Tommy’s are fighting against that rule. Some Tommy’s clinics will take you after 2 losses but I think they need a GP referral.
To be honest a miscarriages they don’t always know the cause but that is not to say that you can’t have a successful pregnancy. Lots of women even with recurring miscarriages do go onto to have a healthy baby wishing you the best Xx
Thank you Jess1981, I am so sorry, you have been through a lot, this is just savage, they want us to get through 3 miscarriages before they will do something. I will keep trying anyway.
Thank you and wishing you all the best. You will hold your daughter in your arms soon. Xxx
Sorry for your losses, it is so hard to go through.
I had the same (Aug 2020 and Dec 2020) following a healthy pregnancy a couple of years earlier. Although the GP was supportive, they are very much limited by NHS guidelines. I got some basic blood tests through them, then paid for thyroid and progesterone tests. Finally I saw a gynae privately who specialised in recurrent miscarriage - she didn't have too much to add to be honest, gave me the option of a couple of other blood tests and a scan, and wrote to the GP to advise I should start on aspirin and progesterone if I fell pregnant again. Neither are proven to solve miscarriages especially as there was no indication as to what caused mine - but it did help to have a plan in place when trying again and it gave me the reassurance that I'd done what I could to try and prevent another. I fell pregnant about 8/9 months after my second loss and am now 26 weeks with things looking ok (although still not taking it for granted)
I also did a load of research and spoke to quite a few people who'd had losses and gone on to a successful pregnancy without any answers/intervention which gave me some reassurance that it could happen. It's so hard when there are limited places to turn and the likelihood of finding anything is low.
Wishing you lots of luck and hope you get some reassurance from somewhere soon x
Thank you LB1234 for your kind words, it means a lot to me as I am so anxious to start over again and end up in the same situation. So I should get my GP to refer me to see a gynecologist consultant??
Mine wouldn't/couldn't through the NHS so I found one privately and arranged myself (googled to find local private hospitals and what consultants they had)
Hi lovely,Just make sure you call your Gp and tell them you are having a miscarriage each time so they record it otherwise they wouldn’t count it ,I had 3 miscarriages last year and after them referring me to a gynaecologist and waiting for 2 months he said that I shouldn’t have been referred to him ! They need to refer you to a recurrent miscarriage specialist he said .Basically how it works I was referred by Gp then received a message 2 weeks later to book an appointment with the clinic and I booked the earliest appointment.the 2nd time when I called the clinic they booked me with another gynaecologist without telling me although I explained who I need to see this time at the beginning! I called a week later to ask who am I seeing and when and they said a gynaecologist because the recurrent miscarriage specialist is working part time and she is having some difficulties to come to work for more than a day at the moment!! How unprofessional to even tell me that but I refused and at the end they made me an appointment with her because I didn’t want to waist more time and be told the same thing While I was waiting for an appointment I fell pregnant without knowing ,after finding out I called a specialist back home who was a family friend and she said because I was pregnant already they won’t do any tests on me so I need to wait for another miscarriage or take baby aspirin and progesterone pessaries as she doesn’t know the reason for miscarriages ,so I stared taking baby aspirin (75ml) and waited for progesterone pessaries to arrive by post from home (took 2 months due to lockdown)but by the time I received them I was 12weeks so when the recurrent miscarriage specialist in the Uk called me and I explained everything she said she would have done the same thing as I was pregnant and she can’t do any tests on me to find out why but I don’t need to use the progesterone because I need them for the first 12 weeks also having a bad heartburn (It was very bad)meant my pregnancy hormones are high anyway so I didn’t need them she said ,but I carried on taking the baby aspirin until 36weeks which she suggested and never spoke to her anymore but that’s because I was pregnant already.I am 36 weeks and 4days today and everything looks and feels fine so you need to chase them up all the time otherwise they are not very helpful ,good luck xx
The Gp dose not prescribe you anything they just refer you .I’ve heard there is no harm in taking baby aspirin in low doses but obviously because the gynaecologist back home was my sister’s friend I called her first and she said when they have a patient that is already pregnant they prescribe them baby aspirin in low doses and progesterone and in most cases it works but if I wasn’t pregnant she would have done the tests to find out what exactly is wrong with me then give me what I need also speaking to the specialist here in the uk she said yes I would have prescribed the same thing for you because I can’t do any tests on you being pregnant, but by the time she called me on my appointment (due to pandemic all by phone ) I was 12weeks pregnant already and had a 12 weeks scan which confirmed everything was ok ,so I am glad I did what the friend told me .Just to add I have a 13 years old son and got pregnant within 2months of trying at the time so could be my age now lol ,I really don’t know x☺️
